Zemiansky Vrbovok combines archaeological history with sacred architecture and traces of the past preserved in the townscape. For travelers who take cultural history into account when choosing a destination, several themes come together here: a treasure find with a specific discovery date, an Evangelical church with distinctive architectural and interior features, and preserved older buildings.

The treasure find and its history

The Zemiansky Vrbovok treasure is archaeological evidence of settlement in the municipality in the 7th century. It was found on May 7, 1937, when farmer Ján Štimel was leveling a slope. The treasure comprises several dozen silver ornaments, coins, vessels, and various damaged objects. The period of settlement and the date of discovery refer to two different historical moments: the 7th century marks the early settlement, while May 7, 1937, is the date the treasure was discovered. This helps place the older history of the municipality both in time and in the specific context of the find.

Evangelical church: architecture and interior

The Evangelical church is located on a hillside south of the village. It is a single-nave Neoclassical building with a semicircular-ended presbytery and a projecting tower dating from 1923. The interior has a flat ceiling and contains the altarpiece “Jesus Christ” by Ľ. Schramek, also from 1923. These features describe both the building’s exterior and its interior furnishings. A memorial plaque to Ondrej Plachý is mounted on the church building. If seeing the interior is important to you, check access arrangements in advance.

Remembrance and preserved architecture

Ondrej Plachý was born in Zemiansky Vrbovok and is regarded as one of the leading representatives of the first phase of the Enlightenment. The memorial plaque on the church building records this connection between the person and his birthplace in the townscape. The preserved buildings also include an original noble manor and several houses with their original architecture. Another historical trace is the “V pavučinách času” monument. It was unveiled by representatives of Zemiansky Vrbovok, Bzovík, and the Slovak National Museum. The town’s history thus encompasses biographical remembrance, preserved architecture, and a monument with a documented unveiling.

Location and landscape

Zemiansky Vrbovok is located on the Krupina Plateau. The Vrbovok stream flows through the village, and the municipality has hilly terrain. These details describe different spatial scales: the location of the village, a stream running through the municipality, and the terrain of the municipal area. From the place where the treasure was hidden, there is a view of Sitno. This landscape connection is directly linked to the findspot; the plateau and stream help locate Zemiansky Vrbovok geographically.
