Senohrad: Baroque Architecture and Hilly Landscape
Accommodation in Senohrad
Senohrad lies on the Krupinská výšina in the mountainous part of the Litavica Valley. Two themes give a good impression of the area: Baroque sacred architecture and a landscape where forests and agricultural land gradually merge.
Landscape and Nature Around Senohrad
The cadastral area is characterised by varied mountain ridges that rise in the northeast to the ridge of Kopaný Závoz. The ridges consist of andesitic pyroclastics, tuffs and tuffites. Oak and beech forests grow in the northern part of the area.
In the Senohrad hunting ground, the forest gradually gives way to agricultural land. The extensive transition zones between these two habitats are called ecotones. The tree species are also specifically identified: the most common is the Turkey oak, followed by European beech, sessile oak, hornbeam and black locust. This mix of forest and open agricultural land shapes the surroundings.
The wildlife in the hunting ground includes red foxes and lynx; wildcats also live there permanently. Red foxes, lynx and wildcats are part of the fauna of the hunting ground described here.
Sacred Buildings and Architecture
The single-nave Baroque Church of Saint Emmerich stands out for its particularly richly decorated interior. During its restoration in 2004, the electrical system was renewed, the interior was repainted for the first time in 70 years, and the exterior facade was repaired. The work carried out in 2004 shapes the building’s present-day condition.
The Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk was built in 1748. It is an octagonal Baroque central-plan building with an adjoining Neoclassical tower and a modern vestibule. The chapel is in good condition and serves its religious purpose. Unlike the single-nave Church of Saint Emmerich, its octagonal form takes centre stage; at the same time, the chapel brings together architectural elements from different periods.
Another element of the local architectural heritage is Ľudový dom Senohrad 20. The folk farmhouse has a thatched roof; preserving it is intended to safeguard Senohrad’s original architecture. Together, this traditional dwelling and its preservation goal add another dimension to the town’s architectural history alongside its sacred buildings.
Traditions and Historical Traces
The Hrachovinka folklore group collects materials from older residents to preserve local traditions, carry them on and pass them down to the next generation. Its programme includes Fašiangy, Jarmok and Odchod na roboty, among others. The group also regularly takes part in the Čipka v Honte cultural programme. Through its performances, the group keeps local traditions alive.
Archaeological traces are also part of the history of the municipal area: settlement finds from the Roman Imperial period have been identified at the Prepoštovica site. These finds date back further than the surviving Baroque buildings. Visitors to Senohrad can combine a look at its sacred buildings and traditional architecture with views of mountain ridges, forests and agricultural land.
