A nature trail explores forestry topics, cultural landmarks reflect architectural and railway heritage, and viewpoints and a nature reserve showcase the landscape and natural environment. These varied themes can help you plan your itinerary around specific interests.

Forest history at Lesnícky skanzen

Lesnícky skanzen is located in Vydrovská dolina near Čierny Balog and is an open-air museum dedicated to forestry throughout Slovakia. The Chodník lesného času educational trail is almost five kilometres long and has 88 stations. They cover the secrets of the forest, the history of forestry, and the work of forestry professionals. The museum thus provides a nationwide thematic framework, while the trail divides these topics into individual stations. The skansen also includes a replica forest chapel and the Symbolický lesnícky cintorín.

Trails and cultural heritage

The Náučný chodník históriou a tradíciami obce Čierny Balog starts at the municipal office and leads directly to Lesnícky skanzen. Along the way, it offers a soft-surface, nature-based alternative to the paved main road. The distinction matters when choosing a route: this trail leads from the municipal office to the skansen, while the Chodník lesného času focuses on its 88 stations and forestry topics.

Architectural and local history are also part of the picture. The parish church in Čierny Balog is dedicated to Nanebovzatiu Panny Márie and was built between 1797 and 1804. At the Čiernohronská železnica in Čierny Balog, a station building and a narrow-gauge track are listed as national cultural monuments. The cultural heritage therefore ranges from a church with a clearly defined construction period to named components of the narrow-gauge railway.

Nature and viewpoints

The Dobročský prales National Nature Reserve is located within the municipality of Čierny Balog, six kilometres south of the settlement of Dobroč. The reserve lies at the end of the Brôtovo valley, in the Pod Geraukou area.

The wooden Pustý vrch lookout tower is eleven metres high and is located above the Komov and Pusté districts of Čierny Balog. Its two observation platforms are three and six metres above the ground; from there, you can enjoy views of Čierny Balog and the surrounding countryside. The views from the rozhľadňa Urbanov klobúk offer a different perspective, taking in the Nízke Tatry, Veporské vrchy, and Poľana. The viewpoints can thus be distinguished by the different sights they overlook.

Seasonal activities and railway routes

The mini farm at Ski Čierny Balog lets visitors pet and feed sheep and goats. During the summer season, Ski Čierny Balog also offers hiking and mountain biking. For the summer season, the Čiernohronská železnica lists the Čierny Balog–Vydrovská dolina (Lesnícky skanzen) route and the Čierny Balog–Dobroč route via the football pitch. If you are planning an animal encounter, a summer activity, or a train ride, check the current offer or timetable details in advance.

A dated glimpse of local events is also part of the picture: the 29th edition of the Fašiangový festival „Už sa fašiang kráti...“ took place from 13 to 17 February 2026.
