Dolná Ždaňa has preserved the character of a traditional street village with authentic folk architecture. Historic homes, the Church of the Holy Trinity and the natural surroundings offer different perspectives on the village. If you are considering Dolná Ždaňa as a place to stay, you can explore its village layout, church architecture and landscape as distinct highlights.

Street Village and Residential Architecture

The stone three-room houses in the lower part of Dolná Ždaňa date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The term “street village” describes the settlement pattern; the houses illustrate residential architecture through their materials, room layout and historical context. A view of Dolná Ždaňa thus takes in both the linear village layout and a clearly dated form of traditional residential architecture.

Church of the Holy Trinity

The Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1847 in a Neoclassical style with lingering Baroque elements. It is a single-nave building; the presbytery has a polygonal end, and the tower is integrated into the gabled facade. “Single-nave” describes a church with one nave, while “polygonal” refers to the presbytery’s multi-sided end. The interior retains a small side altar with sculptural drapery and six small sculptures dating from the mid-19th century; the interior furnishings may change.

For an architectural comparison, consider two scales side by side: the houses as part of the settlement pattern, and the church as a religious building with a single-nave layout and an integrated facade tower.

Local History and Memorials

The village’s history dates back to the mid-14th century, when Dolná Ždaňa developed and belonged to the estate of Revište Castle. A statue of Saint Florian stands by the roadside; Dolná Ždaňa also has a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. One memorial plaque commemorates residents who were tortured and killed during the Second World War; another is dedicated to the writer Elena Čepčeková.

Landscape and Village Centre

The municipality extends along the right bank of the Hron; the Prochotský potok also flows through its territory. In the centre, a church, a small park and public green spaces shape the public realm; the stream runs through it, as does a local road. Medokýš is designated as a mineral spring.

The western part of the municipal territory lies on the eastern slopes of the Vtáčnik Mountains, which consist mainly of andesite. The slopes associated with Dolná Ždaňa are forested with fir and beech stands; their composition may vary locally.

Regional Context and Rail Travel

Dolná Ždaňa is currently part of the Hlinické Pohronie microregion. It was established in 1999 to promote the development of its municipalities, the region and tourism.
