Zemun: Gardoš, the Danube and Culture
Accommodation in Zemun
Zemun brings together a range of options for a stay: architectural history and archaeological traces on Gardoš, cultural events, market life, views of the Danube and shady paths in the park. If you’re looking for a hotel in Zemun, you can start by considering whether history, culture or scenery will shape your stay most. The places below offer different perspectives—from archaeological evidence to a protected natural area.
Gardoš and Zemun’s Architectural History
Archaeological traces on Gardoš point to an Early Neolithic settlement in Zemun. The visible remains of the medieval fortification on Gardoš date from the 14th century. The Gardoš Tower was built in 1896 to commemorate the thousandth anniversary of the Hungarians’ arrival in Pannonia. Early settlement, the medieval fortification and the 19th-century tower thus mark different historical periods.
The Spirtina House was built in 1855 for the prominent Zemun merchant family Spirta. In the city’s official assessment of monuments, the Karamata House is counted among Zemun and Belgrade’s most significant cultural monuments. The Spirtina House is notable for its construction date and the family who commissioned it, while the Karamata House stands out for its cultural and historical classification. Together, they offer different points of entry into Zemun’s architectural history.
Culture and Everyday Life
“Leto na Gardošu” is an annual cultural event in Zemun; specific program dates vary. If you’re travelling on a particular date, check the program for that year. Madlenianum is the first private opera and theatre house in Serbia and the wider region. The cultural scene thus includes both an event with changing program dates and an independent cultural institution.
During the day, Masarikov trg becomes a large market. Its daytime role gives the square a different character from the architectural landmarks and cultural institutions: here, market activity shapes the scene.
The Danube, the Park and the Island
Zemunski Kej offers views of the Danube. In Zemunski Park, century-old trees shade the paths. These are two distinct landscape experiences: views of the river along the quay and shaded paths in the park.
Veliko ratno ostrvo is a river island and protected natural area at the confluence of the Sava and Danube. The island belongs to the wider municipality of Zemun, not the historic town center. In July and August 2026, citizens were informed about the island’s history, nature conservation regulations, the island’s management, and its plant, animal and diverse bird life during guided ecological walks along the “staza zdravlja.” The activity was aimed at citizens; check again in advance for any future dates.
