Discover Vrancea: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Vrancea
Vrancea offers a range of travel experiences: protected mountain landscapes, trails with specific planning details, cultural sites and wine. Putna-Vrancea Nature Park protects distinctive landscape complexes and offers the public opportunities for recreation and tourism. Covering 38,204 hectares, it accounts for 41.32 percent of Vrancea County’s mountainous area. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether nature and route planning or culture and culinary experiences should take centre stage.
Waterfalls, Lakes and Distinctive Landscapes
Cascada Putnei is a national protected area in Vrancea County, within the administrative boundaries of Tulnici commune, near the village of Lepșa. The waterfall is 76 metres long and drops 14 metres; its water collects in a lake about 12 metres deep. Within the nature park, Cascada Putnei is designated as a sustainable management zone. Visitors should stay within the designated area and follow the signs.
At Lacul Negru, distinctive habitats meet clear geographical landmarks: the lake lies in the Năruja basin at an altitude of 1,250 metres, covers more than one hectare and reaches a maximum depth of 7.5 metres. The surrounding area includes an active peat bog complex with sundews, salamanders and alpine newts. The Focul Viu protected area also features an unusual geological phenomenon: natural gas rises through cracks in the Earth’s crust and ignites into flames 30 to 50 centimetres high.
Trails and Planning
The E8 European long-distance path runs for 67 kilometres through the Vrancea Mountains. One specific destination along a route through a protected area is Cheile Tișiței, considered one of the most important tourist attractions in the Vrancea Mountains. The trail runs seven kilometres upstream through the protected area. Access is signposted from the DN2D between Focșani and Târgu Secuiesc; it then follows a gravel road for about 1.3 kilometres. As trail conditions can change, check them before your visit.
Allow more time for Lacul Negru: the marked trail follows the DJ205D and then continues for about 16 kilometres along a forest road through the Năruja Valley. Plan on approximately eight to ten hours for the round trip. The forest road can be impassable at certain times; take this into account when planning and check the conditions in advance.
Culture and Remembrance
The Muzeul Țării Vrancei in Vidra has five rooms. Exhibits include traditional carpets from the Putna, Zăbala and Năruja valleys, as well as folk costumes from Vrancea. The Mărășești Mausoleum offers a different focus: it preserves the remains of 5,073 soldiers and officers in 154 individual crypts and nine communal crypts. The museum and the memorial site provide two distinct cultural reasons to plan a trip to the region.
Wine and Regional Cuisine
The main route of the Drumul Vinului Vrancea runs from Focșani through Odobești and Tifești to Panciu. A guided visit to Crama Pandora covers the winemaking process from grape to bottle, the wine cellar, the technologies used and the Cotești terroir. The offer also includes a wine tasting with a guided cellar tour and three wines from the SECRETS range: Șarbă, Rose and Fetească Neagră. As reservation details may change, check them in advance.
Punct Gastronomic Local „La Moise“ serves freshly prepared home cooking every day as a set menu, including dishes made with vegetables from its own garden. Confirm availability before your trip.
