Sarichioi Commune on Lake Razim: Landscape and Lipovan Culture
Accommodation in Sarichioi Commune
Sarichioi lies on the shore of Lake Razim. The lake also forms the eastern boundary of the commune and is part of the Razim-Sinoe lagoon complex. This brings together landscape and cultural themes for your trip planning: activities on the water, Lipovan traditions, and the medieval history of Enisala Fortress.
Lake Razim and activities
Kayak trips of up to 20 kilometers are possible on Lake Razim. Check locally in advance for launch points and rental options before planning a trip. Birdwatching is also among the leisure activities in the commune. You can choose between a specific water activity and nature watching as different ways to spend your time in the area.
The Sarichioi market takes place on Sundays; confirm that it is currently operating before your visit. Sarichioi also has an old fishing port. If you plan to visit, check locally for access conditions and facilities. In July 2024, boat trips in the Danube Delta Reserve were also associated with Sarichioi. Check departure details and dates in advance before making firm plans for such a trip.
Enisala Fortress and its history
The medieval Enisala Fortress was built for military purposes in the second half of the 14th century, very likely by Genoese merchants. Its walls and bastions still stand in places at a height of 5 to 10 meters. The fortification offers a tangible impression of the historic structure, without reducing its origins to a definitive Genoese attribution.
The route to the fortress follows the E87 Tulcea–Babadag road, then the DJ 223A to Enisala. Check road conditions before setting out. The “Enisala – Unitate la Cetate” festival was held at the foot of the fortress in August in several previous years. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for the relevant year.
Traditional architecture and Lipovan heritage
The farmhouse museum in Enisala presents a synthesis of traditional architecture in northern Dobruja from the beginning of the 20th century. The ensemble includes a house with a pantry, a stable, a shed, a kitchen, a summer kitchen with an oven, a dovecote, and a well. The different buildings show a farmstead layout with living and utility areas as well as agricultural outbuildings.
As of October 27, 2025, a closure was planned because of work under a project for the period 2024 to 2027. Check whether the museum has reopened before visiting.
Sarichioi’s Lipovan culture also offers several distinct points of interest. Lipovan farmhouses, more than a century old, are part of the historic village landscape. Lipovan women’s dress preserves the structure of traditional Russian dress from the area around Moscow and the middle Volga. Lipovan folklore includes ritual forms associated with calendar customs, important life events, and incantations. The Lipovans in Sarichioi also founded the folk ensemble “Landâș” (“Lăcrămioara”).
