For a trip to Sacalaz, several themes take centre stage: archaeological settlement remains, the development of the village, and a cycling route almost 30 kilometres long. Together, they provide an overview of historical periods, the location of the former settlement, and a specific cycling route.

Archaeology and Local History

A document dated 29 December 1392 records Săcălaz. The archaeological site of Săcălaz – Obiectiv 8 reaches back to much earlier periods: it includes settlement remains from the Eneolithic Tiszapolgar culture and from the post-Roman period. The written record and the archaeological site complement one another, but represent different historical layers: the exact date places the document in the Middle Ages, while the finds point to older settlement phases.

A later relocation moved the settlement to the banks of the Bega, onto marshy land surrounded by pastures and tall reeds. The historical account thus records both a change in the settlement’s location and the character of the riverside landscape at the time. Alongside dates and archaeological traces, this offers a geographical perspective on local history: not only when, but also in what kind of landscape the village developed.

The layout of the settlement also offers a specific historical point of reference: Săcălaz was redesigned according to a typical Austrian plan, with the Catholic church at its centre. A Catholic church in Săcălaz is dated to 1772. The Orthodox community’s wooden church is a separate point of reference; it burned down on 7 April 2026. A historical date and a later event therefore sit side by side, relating to a Catholic church and the Orthodox wooden church respectively.

Agricultural Past

Historically, growing grain—especially wheat and maize—was the residents’ main occupation. The first grain mill in Săcălaz was built in 1725. Together, these details show two aspects of agriculture at the time: the cultivation of important crops and the processing of grain.

Cycling Route and Transport Infrastructure

For cyclists, the route and its approximate total length are especially specific. A route description maintained by the county tourism organisation and published on 16 July 2018 runs from Timișoara via Sânmihaiu Român and Săcălaz back to Timișoara; the route is almost 30 kilometres long. This is the length of the entire route, not just the section in Săcălaz. The sequence of places shows how Săcălaz fits into the tour and where it starts and ends.

On 1 July 2026, Săcălaz Municipality completed the project “Development of Environmentally Friendly Transport Infrastructure – Cycle Paths in Săcălaz Municipality, Timiș County”. It includes cycle paths and infrastructure for non-motorised transport. The route and the project have different focuses: the route description gives the course and length, while the municipal project specifies the type and completion of an infrastructure measure. This makes it possible to consider a specific route separately from a measure supporting cycling and non-motorised transport.
