The village between stream and plain

Mariţa can be viewed geographically on two levels: at the village itself and in the context of the commune. The Câinelui stream flows through Mariţa roughly from north to south. Mariţa belongs to the commune of Călineşti, whose territory lies in the southern part of the Găvanu-Burdea Plain. For a description of the area, these two details serve different purposes: the stream marks a north-south line through Mariţa, while the plain places the commune’s territory within a broader landscape. This shift in scale helps you distinguish the village from the commune geographically.

Archaeological sites at different terrain locations

The archaeological site descriptions also refer to specific topographic landmarks. The Mariţa CAL 004 site lies on the western secondary terrace on the right bank of the Câinelui stream. The Mariţa CAL 012 site lies on the high western terrace of the Câinelui stream, bounded to the north by a small hollow. The Mariţa CAL 029 archaeological settlement lies on the high eastern terrace of the Câinelui stream. These locations can be distinguished by whether they lie west or east of the stream, the height of their terraces, and the hollow to the north. Thus, the descriptions do not combine the sites into a single findspot, but make their different positions in the terrain clear.

Another spatial reference point is the Mariţa CAL 011 archaeological settlement. It lies about 800 metres west of DJ 703 and 1.3 kilometres north of DJ 612. These road references locate the settlement. A notice about a local monograph from 2016 mentions pottery fragments and burnt clay discovered in the vicinity of Mariţa, on the right bank of the Pârâul Câinelui. For these finds, the riverbank and cardinal direction provide the location references; CAL 011, by contrast, is located in relation to two roads. Different spatial details therefore sit side by side: terraces, a settlement located in relation to roads, and finds on a riverbank.

Name history and earlier periods

A notice about a local monograph from 2016 gives 1651/1652 as the first documented mention of Mariţa. At the time, the village was called Afumați. The date refers to the written record and the name used at the time.

The same notice summarises archaeological research in Copăceanca and Mariţa. Human traces and settlements dating to the Eneolithic were discovered, including those of the Gumelnița culture, which dates approximately from 4500 to 3900 BC. The history of the area thus encompasses different points in time: a name recorded in historical documents and much older archaeological contexts.

The date 1651/1652 refers to the first documented mention, not the founding of the village; the archaeological dates go back much further. Mariţa’s name history and the history of its earlier finds can therefore be understood as two distinct time periods.
