You can get to know Comuna Socond through its cultural and historical sites, traditional customs and connections to the landscape. When looking for a hotel, start by asking yourself: Should your stay focus mainly on church architecture and history, a festival whose date varies, or landscape themes? The following places and topics offer different points of reference.

Wooden Churches and Cultural Heritage

The wooden church ā€œIntrarea Maicii Domnului Ć®n Bisericăā€ in StĆ¢na, in the commune of Comuna Socond, dates from the 18th century, approximately 1778. A porch supported by carved wooden posts is a distinctive architectural feature.

Fragments of a wall painting from the late 18th or early 19th century survive on the vault of the naos. The painting is badly damaged, and its condition may change as a result of conservation work. The church in Stâna therefore stands out both for its architectural form and its fragments of historical painting.

The wooden church in Soconzel is also included in Satu Mare County Museum activities promoting cultural heritage and museum education. This is a different cultural connection from the architectural details in Stâna: here, the focus is on sharing cultural heritage associated with a wooden church.

Traditions with Different Time Horizons

ā€œDanțu’ la șurăā€ takes place in Soconzel every year on Easter Monday. Since the date of Easter varies from year to year, the festival also falls on different calendar dates. Check the date for the relevant year if you want to plan your trip around it.

The tradition takes place in the barn of a village resident, chosen by community representatives, and traditional violinists are hired to perform. The barn and the musicians may vary. The host and performers are therefore not fixed from one edition to the next.

A 2017 account presented ā€œLa Digănieā€ in Hodișa as a local counterpart to ā€œDanțu’ la șurăā€ in Soconzel. Traditional dances there were paired with tastings of local foods, including homemade cakes and slices of bread topped with lard. The timing differs: ā€œDanțu’ la șurăā€ takes place every year on Easter Monday, whereas the description of ā€œLa Digănieā€ refers to an event held in 2017.

Landscapes at Codru

Comuna Socond lies at the foot of the Codru area and belongs to the Codru ethnographic and folkloric zone in Satu Mare County. The first description refers to its geographical setting, the second to its cultural region.

Hodișa has an artificial reservoir with a water surface of 12 hectares. The Valea Maria River extends for 10 kilometers. These are two distinct landscape features: a specific area of water and a river; the length given refers to the river, not to a particular route.

Memorial Sites and Historical Connections

County roads DJ193F and DJ193A pass through Comuna Socond. The Heroes’ Monument in Socond is located on DJ193F between Socond and Soconzel and commemorates the heroes who lost their lives in the Second World War. The monumental complex in Socond, on DJ193F, includes the graves of 28 Romanian soldiers.

Another historical site lies between Cuța and Soconzel: the first Orthodox monastery in the Satu Mare region was founded there almost 400 years ago. If you are interested in regional history, this historical site between Cuța and Soconzel is a point of reference.
