Bixad: Monastery History, Nature and Regional Culture
Accommodation in Bixad
Bixad combines religious history with a striking landscape and regional culture. When planning your trip, you can choose from several distinct themes: the monastery church and its pilgrimage, the rocky area of Piatra Bixadului, and historical traces in the commune and its surroundings.
Monastery, Churches and Pilgrimage
The church of Bixad Monastery is dedicated to the holy apostles Peter and Paul. Construction began in 1769, and the church was consecrated in 1771. The church houses a Marian icon that was brought to Bixad in 1853. It draws believers from the neighboring counties of Bihor, SÄlaj, MaramureČ and BistriČa-NÄsÄud. The buildingās history and the veneration of the icon provide two distinct historical points of reference for the monastery: the construction of the church and the religious significance of the image.
A pilgrimage is held at Bixad Monastery every year on August 15. If you would like to plan your stay around this occasion, check the latest date and schedule information before you travel. Another church in Bixad, āNaČterea Maicii Domnului,ā dates to 1881; it adds a later point of reference in church history to the story of the monastery church.
Piatra Bixadului and Trails Through the Landscape
Piatra Bixadului is made of monolithic andesite and forms part of an extrusive volcanic dome in the OaČ Mountains. As a natural attraction, it is especially appealing to people interested in hiking and nature. Its description involves two geological aspects: andesite identifies the rock, while the volcanic dome describes its geological form. This makes it possible to understand Piatra not only as a natural attraction, but also in terms of how it was formed.
The trail to Piatra Bixadului starts in Bixad at the turnoff to Bixad Monastery and leads through forests and meadows. Trail conditions can vary by season, and the rocky area around Piatra Bixadului can be particularly dangerous when wet. Factor the season into your plans and check local conditions before setting out.
Belavar and Historical Traces in the Surrounding Area
Near Bixad, in the āCoasta BoineČtilorā area, lies the fortified earthwork settlement of Belavar; it is not within the village of Bixad itself. The site dates to the Late Bronze Age, approximately 1150 to 950/900 BC. There is also evidence of further settlement in later periods. This means the history of this nearby site goes back considerably further than that of the churches mentioned in Bixad.
History and hiking enthusiasts can explore the ruins via trails from BoineČti or CÄlineČti-OaČ. Check access conditions locally if you plan to make this detour. The trails to Belavar offer a separate way to explore regional history and should not be confused with the trail to Piatra Bixadului described above.
Mineral Springs and Local Culture
Locals traditionally call the mineral springs āborcut,ā and they are known for their therapeutic properties. Mineral water bottled in Bixad was exported and marketed throughout Europe. The former spa operation at BÄile Bixad has ended; the baths have been discontinued. This historical development is an important part of the townās history, but it does not mean that a spa operates there today.
Dance is another chapter in local culture: the āDanČuā la CiupercÄā project featured OČenesc dances on Sundays and holidays for five months. The first edition of the festival of the same name took place in Bixad and attracted tourists alongside locals and cultural professionals. A 2017 cultural report also places the traditional CiupercÄ āCiuperca din Borcutā beside the town hall in the center of the commune.
