Comuna Răucești: Archaeology and Village Churches
Accommodation in Comuna Răucești
Comuna Răucești lies at the transition between the Moldavian Subcarpathians and the Moldavian Plateau. The commune’s cultural and historical heritage ranges from early settlements to churches dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. If you are planning your stay around a particular theme, you will find specific points of interest relating to archaeology, architectural history and local tradition.
Archaeology across several periods
At Oglinzi-Băi, the archaeological site includes an Early Neolithic settlement of the Starčevo–Criș culture. Oglinzi-Cetățuia is a fortified settlement from the Neolithic and Eneolithic periods, located near a salt spring. Even without prior knowledge of archaeology, you can place the sites in context: the periods span the Early Neolithic, Neolithic and Eneolithic through to the Bronze Age. At Oglinzi-Cetățuia, the settlement’s fortified character is an additional point of interest alongside its date.
At Oglinzi-Lăzăreni, a Cucuteni settlement lies on the right bank of the Brustura stream, where the Babete stream flows into the Brustura. The site is on gently west-sloping terrain with a freshwater spring. Oglinzi-Fața Slatinei is a Bronze Age settlement. Răucești–Dealul Munteni lies 100 metres south of Răucești village. Taken together, these sites span different periods and have specific connections to local places and landscapes. Both aspects are useful for orientation: the settlements’ dates and their locations by a stream or spring, or south of the village.
Churches with different dates
The churches in the commune date from different periods. In Răucești de Jos, construction of the Adormirea Maicii Domnului began in 1865 at the initiative of Mihail Kogălniceanu. Sfântul Nicolae in Răucești de Sus was consecrated in 1893; the present-day Nașterea Maicii Domnului church in Săvești was consecrated in 1922. The present-day village church in Oglinzi was built between 1925 and 1933; it also houses a bell cast in Blaj. These dates mark different events: 1865 is the start of construction, 1893 and 1922 are consecration dates, and 1925 to 1933 is the construction period.
Music and local tradition
Local culture includes the recording “Capra bătrână din Răucești – Neamț,” preserved in an institutional collection of traditional music. The Capra Bătrână New Year’s group comes from Oglinzi and has performed in the past on stages in Iași, Suceava and Piatra Neamț. The recording and the group offer different perspectives: the place name appears in the title of a preserved piece of music, while the group is identified by its origins in Oglinzi and its historical stage performances. These musical connections complement the commune’s archaeological and church heritage.
