Slobozia’s cultural history can be explored from several perspectives: church architecture, archaeological settlements, agriculture and commemoration. If culture is part of your stay, these different themes can help you decide what interests you most.

Churches and Architectural History

The Catedrala Episcopală din Slobozia is 37 metres high, 45 metres long and 24 metres wide. At the apses, it measures 33 metres across; its total area is 850 square metres. The cathedral can be visited daily. As access conditions may change, check them before your arrival. The building is visible from the E85 European route near Slobozia.

The Biserica „Adormirea Maicii Domnului”, dating from 1864, stands in Slobozia’s Bora district. Another church, the wooden Biserica de lemn „Sf. Nicolae”, was moved to Slobozia in 1748 from the village of Poiana in the commune of Ciulnița. The two buildings therefore differ both in age and in their architectural history.

The listed Mănăstirea „Sf. Voievozi” ensemble is dated to the 17th to 19th centuries. The Mănăstirea „Sfinţii Voievozi” was founded by Matei Basarab around 1634. The lower part of the bell tower and the surrounding wall remain from the original foundation. Thus, the monastery’s history includes both its historical period and individual surviving architectural features.

Archaeology and Agricultural History

The archaeological site of Slobozia lies beyond the Bora district, east of the Slobozia–Ciulniţa railway line, on the high terrace of the Ialomiţa River. It includes a Neolithic settlement of the Boian culture. The site also contains medieval settlements dating from the 9th to 11th centuries and from the 17th and 18th centuries. The dates therefore range from the Neolithic to the modern period, helping distinguish the different phases of settlement.

The Muzeul Naţional al Agriculturii has more than 8,400 objects. These include agricultural tools and machinery, industrial archaeology objects, means of transport, ethnographic collections, commemorative culture and church collections. The range connects agriculture with technology, everyday life and remembrance. The museum also has a 1.7-hectare park with 40 dendrological species.

The permanent exhibition „La pas prin lumea satului“ presents harvest customs, including the braided work „Barba lui Dumnezeu“, and screens documentaries about these customs. The specific presentation may change. Visitors interested in rural traditions will find a different focus here than at the churches or archaeological sites.

Recreation, Events and Remembrance

Pădurea PERI is a recreation area with barbecue spots and a space for various festival competitions. Facilities and programmes may change; check current conditions before visiting.

The Centrul Cultural Ionel Perlea hosts painting exhibitions and exhibitions by children, as well as chamber music and symphonic concerts, symposia and conferences. Individual events vary. If you plan to attend a particular concert or exhibition, check the relevant event dates.

A military cemetery in Slobozia is divided into four burial sections for war dead from the Romanian, British, German, French and Turkish armies. It contains the remains of more than 1,900 war dead, including 77 Romanian heroes. The Heroes’ Cemetery also holds Romanian officers and soldiers who died in the First World War, as well as foreign combatants. A memorial in Slobozia was inaugurated in 1932.
