Peștenița lies in a valley west of Peșteana. The village was formerly also called “Pesteana Mică”. Its history and surroundings can be understood through several themes: archaeological settlement remains, the branch church and local traditions. Nearby Peșteana also offers natural sites and archaeological finds. It is worth distinguishing between the similarly named archaeological sites in the two villages; their chronological classifications partly overlap but are not identical.

Location and Landscape

The local road DC91 leads from Peșteana to Peștenița. A 2024 municipal planning document describes it as partially paved. In the area of Comuna Densuș, the Bianu River, also called Peștenița, extends for 7 km. This length refers to its course within the commune, not just within the village. The shared name of the river and village thus refers to two different geographic features.

The nearby village of Peșteana in Comuna Densuș is home to Mlaștina de la Peșteana, a 2 ha botanical nature reserve in IUCN Category IV. It is part of Geoparcul Dinozaurilor „Țara Hațegului“. The protected area is therefore located in Peșteana, not in Peștenița itself.

Archaeological Traces

The “Situl arheologic de la Peşteniţa” site lies on the left side of the road to Peștenița, 200 m from the railway crossing. The site is associated with settlement remains from the Roman period and the Bronze Age Wietenberg culture. These two classifications refer to different periods; the mention of the Wietenberg culture specifies the Bronze Age find.

By contrast, the nearby, similarly named “Situl arheologic de la Peşteniţa – Haltă” site is in Peșteana, on the bank of the Ortovarniţa stream, north of the CFR halt and east of the road to Peșteana. This site contains settlement remains from the Middle Neolithic of the Vinča culture, the Bronze Age of the Balta-Sărată culture, the Roman period and the Middle Ages. Both sites have links to the Bronze Age and the Roman period. The Peșteana site additionally includes the Middle Neolithic and the Middle Ages; there, the Bronze Age is associated with the Balta-Sărată culture, while at the site beside the road to Peștenița it is associated with the Wietenberg culture.

Church and Local Tradition

A church report dated 28 February 2026 describes the church in Peștenița as a branch church of the Peșteana parish in the Hațeg deanery. It is dedicated to Saint Theodore Tiron. The parish and deanery indicate its church affiliations; the dedication identifies the saint to whom the church is dedicated.

The Paștile Mici tradition in Peștenița includes Alergatul prescurii and the shooting of a rooster, împușcatul cocoșului. In Peștenița, a nedee takes place during the first week after Easter. If this date is important for your travel plans, check the specific date for the relevant year.
