Gârbău Commune: Hotels, Churches and Cycling Route
Accommodation in Gârbău Commune
The cultural and historical highlights of Gârbău Commune range from medieval traces and wooden churches to a 16th-century ensemble. They also include an archaeological settlement, local cheese-making and a longer cycling route. For your hotel stay, these highlights can help you organise your interests in the commune: church architecture, history, regional products or cycling.
Churches and architectural history
On a hill in Gârbău, a fragment of a 15th-century baptistery marks the site where a Hungarian church stood in the Middle Ages. Another historical trace is the wooden church of Gârbău. It was built around 1700 in Gârboel, the settlement’s former location. The building is classified as a historic monument and is no longer used for religious services.
At the wooden church of Turea, the materials used and how they were worked are in focus. The walls are made of hewn oak beams. Oak shingles for the roof were made with a drawknife and joined using tongue and groove. This makes it possible to observe the construction method both in the walls and in the way the roof shingles are joined.
The Reformed church ensemble in Viștea dates from the 16th century. The church was initially Catholic and later became Reformed. It includes a massive bell tower with a visible timber structure. In comparison with Turea, the ensemble’s date and changing religious history stand out here alongside its construction. A historical-ethnographic museum is also listed for Viștea.
Archaeological traces and local highlights
The archaeological settlement at Dealul Babii is documented for the Eneolithic, the Bronze Age and the Roman period. This means the historical highlights extend beyond the churches. Lészay Manor is a ruinous building: doors and windows are missing, and beams are damaged and hanging down. Check its condition before visiting. The wooden church in Cornești is also among the commune’s tourist attractions.
Cornești is also home to Atelierul de brânză NarCheese. It offers artisan cheese made from 100 percent organic milk, using Swiss recipes adapted to the region. This information refers to the cheese and its production; it does not imply a tasting or a tour.
Cycling and planning
The 63-kilometre cycling route passes through Turea, Gârbău and Nădășelu. It is rated moderate and runs mostly on paved roads or unpaved tracks intended for horse-drawn vehicles. Northwest of Cluj-Napoca, the route crosses a series of ridges and valleys and is considered particularly interesting from a cultural perspective. Difficulty and trail conditions can vary seasonally; check the route conditions before setting off.
“Fiii satului Gârbău” is listed for late June, and the “Balul strugurilor” in Turea for 5 October. If one of these dates matters for your trip, check in advance whether the event is taking place that year.
