Prejmer: Fortress, Local History and Nature
Accommodation in Prejmer
Prejmer combines a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich local history, a Natura 2000 site and seasonal events. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Prejmer, you can plan your trip around specific interests: the fortress and historic buildings, nature, motorsports or an event date. The places and activities vary both in character and in timing.
Fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site
The architectural ensemble of Cetatea Ţărănească Prejmer and the Evangelical Church of Prejmer are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fortress wall is 480 metres long and 12 metres high. Cetatea Ţărănească Prejmer also has 272 storage and refuge rooms across four levels. Their storage and protective functions add a practical dimension to the complex's defensive character.
A covered walkway with loopholes and channels for pouring boiling water is also part of the fortified complex. The fortress houses an ethnographic museum that presents various aspects of life in Saxon communities. Here, defensive architecture, refuge rooms and depictions of community life come together.
Historic buildings and the village layout
Historic buildings and settlement features also shape the character of Prejmer beyond the fortress. The Orthodox Church of “Sfinţii Apostoli Petru şi Pavel” was built in 1769 and features Baroque elements. The Şcoala Germană dates from the 19th century and is listed as a local historic and architectural monument.
Houses in Prejmer dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries are also listed as UNESCO World Heritage properties: Str. Mare Nos. 2 and 57, Str. Pompierilor No. 13, Str. Cenuşii No. 105, Str. Braşovului Nos. 56 and 57, and Str. Pajiştei No. 1043. In addition to individual buildings, historic plots and a continuous street frontage have been preserved; the houses usually face the street with their narrow ends. An old canal system survives in Broaştei and Morii streets. Washing and rinsing places can be found on Izvoarelor Street and along the extension of Cetăţii Street. These features give local history a tangible form beyond the major buildings.
Nature, leisure and equestrian sports
The protected Natura 2000 site Pădurile şi mlaştinile eutrofe de la Prejmer covers 356 hectares. Of this area, 242 hectares lie within the municipality of Prejmer.
Another leisure option is Prejmer Raceway. Its karting track is 1,250 metres long, 8 to 10 metres wide and has 15 turns. It is designed for amateur and professional drivers and offers fast straights and challenging turns, with high safety standards. As the track configuration may change, check the latest track information before your trip.
Prejmer also has links to equestrian sports: the Federația Ecvestră Română lists ACSE 163 PLOPI in connection with show jumping competitions in Prejmer. The federation also lists Clubul de Echitatie 163 Plopi in Prejmer in connection with Working Equitation. The two names refer to different competition contexts listed by the federation.
