The commune of Moieciu lies in the Rucăr-Bran Corridor between the Piatra Craiului and Bucegi Massifs. When choosing a hotel location, it can help to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: nature, hiking, cycling routes or local culture. These themes can be experienced in different places across the commune.

Location and orientation

Moieciu de Jos is 30 km from Brașov, on the DN 73. If you plan to visit Brașov and stay in Moieciu during the same trip, this distance is a useful point of reference. When choosing your destinations, it is also worth looking at the individual villages and their different nature and cultural experiences.

Nature between villages and at different elevations

Piatra Craiului National Park includes parts of the commune of Moieciu, including the villages of Măgura and Peștera. Peștera lies at an altitude of about 1,000 metres and offers opportunities to relax in nature. The Cascadele Moieciului also make a striking feature of the landscape: they consist of two streams that plunge 15–20 metres.

The Vama Strunga paleontological fossil reserve offers a different kind of natural attraction. It covers 10 hectares and contains fauna from the Middle Jurassic. If you are interested in geological heritage as well as scenery, you can make the reserve a focus of your visit alongside the waterfalls and opportunities to enjoy nature in Peștera.

Comparing hiking and cycling routes

Two hiking routes are described, each with different duration and difficulty ratings. The Valea Bângăleasa–Șaua Strunga–Cabana Padina route takes 4–5 hours and is rated moderate to difficult. The Valea Bângăleasa–Poiana Guțanu–Hotel Peștera route takes 6–7 hours and is rated difficult. In direct comparison, the second route is longer and rated more difficult; check current trail conditions before setting out.

The cycling routes described also differ. The Zărnești–Măgura–Peștera–Moieciu de Jos route offers views of the traditional architecture of a mountain village along the way. Route 7 of Piatra Craiului National Park descends steeply from Peștera to Moieciu and has tight hairpin bends. The first route offers views of traditional mountain-village architecture; Route 7 descends steeply from Peștera to Moieciu and has tight hairpin bends.

Cultural heritage and local experiences

The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God in Cheia dates back to 1818. Traces of human settlement dating from the Palaeolithic were discovered in Peștera Liliecilor, in the village of Peștera. The commune of Moieciu also preserves a traditional facility for processing sheep’s wool. Together, these places and traditions appeal to different interests: a religious building with a documented date, archaeological traces and local crafts.

Guided cultural tours and hikes are available in Moieciu de Sus. The activities on offer also include electric bicycles and guided or self-guided routes. A visit to a traditional loom with a demonstration of how it is used, a cheese tasting and a traditional lunch made with organically produced ingredients are available on request. Check the availability of these experiences before your trip.
