If you’re looking for a hotel in Tønsberg, medieval history, museums and Viking ships offer specific themes for your stay. The cultural attractions have different focuses: you can choose to explore castle ruins, historical exhibitions, art or a replica ship. This lets you plan your trip around the subjects that interest you most.

Medieval heritage at Slottsfjell

The medieval town of Tønsberg and Slottsfjellet form one of Norway’s most significant medieval heritage areas. The remains of Tunsberghus, Norway’s largest medieval castle complex, lie on Slottsfjell. The Castle Rock Tower was completed in 1888, stands 17 metres tall and offers an impressive view of the town of Tønsberg. The castle ruins and tower represent different periods: the remains take you back to medieval history, while the year it was built clearly marks the tower as a later addition to the site. If you’re interested in a town’s different historical layers, this area brings together the castle complex and a viewpoint in a themed narrative.

Viking ships and the Middle Ages at the museum

The Slottsfjellsmuseet is located in central Tønsberg, at the foot of Slottsfjell. The Viking Ship Hall displays Norway’s fourth Viking ship: the Klåstad trading ship, the only preserved Viking ship displayed outside Oslo. Several medieval exhibitions explore the lives of kings, nobles, clergy and ordinary people in medieval Norway. A blue whale measuring around 27 metres in length and weighing approximately 150 tonnes is also on display. The whale offers a different focus alongside the medieval themes.

The cathedral and older churches

Tønsberg Cathedral also brings together several historical periods. It was built in 1858 over the ruins of a 12th-century basilica dedicated to the archdeacon St. Lawrence. Its furnishings include items from Lavranskirken and Mariakirken. At the cathedral, you can therefore encounter both the 19th-century building history and traces of older churches preserved in its furnishings. For visitors interested in architectural history, the combination of the building date, its predecessor and the furnishings offers a clear thread to follow.

Art at Haugar Art Museum

Located in central Tønsberg, Haugar Art Museum presents permanent and temporary exhibitions. It is housed in a distinctive brick building, the former seamen’s school. The building’s former use and the art museum thus come together in one place. As the exhibitions change, it’s worth checking the current programme before your visit. Activities for children include an art hunt, activity rooms and the Kunstporten app; check in advance which of these are currently available.

A walk-through Oseberg replica

Vikingodden offers another perspective on Viking ships: there, you can see and board an exact replica of the Oseberg ship. This is different from seeing the preserved Klåstad trading ship in the museum hall. The comparison is straightforward: at the museum, you see the historical ship on display; at Vikingodden, you can board the replica.
