Tjøme: Coast, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Tjøme
Tjøme offers a variety of ways to spend your stay: coastal scenery, hiking trails, cultural sites and a via ferrata route. At Verdens Ende, fjord views, rocks and skerries define the landscape; Mostranda offers sandy beaches and rocky outcrops. There are also historic buildings and the visitor centre for Færder National Park. To help with your planning, the specific differences are useful: a coastal trail about 3 km long, a four-hour climbing tour and a museum with seasonal weekend opening hours each offer something different.
Rocky Coast and Beaches
Verdens Ende is a recreational area with fjord views, rocks, fishing spots and skerries. The area of Færder National Park near Verdens Ende is used for boat trips, paddling, water sports, hiking, fishing and swimming. This means there are a range of activities both on the water and on land.
Mostranda lies on the southwest side of Tjøme, 5 km from the centre in the direction of Verdens Ende. The area is characterised by two sandy beaches and numerous rocky outcrops. Parking is available at the campsite or 200 m before it. If you are comparing coastal locations, the scenery here is different from the rocky landscape of Verdens Ende: sandy beaches and rocky outcrops are both part of the picture.
Hiking and Climbing
Færderstien is a family-friendly trail suitable for both short and long hikes, and it can be walked in sections. On Tjøme, it leads all the way to Verdens Ende. The option of walking it in sections gives you the flexibility to adapt your hike to the time you have available, without having to plan the entire trail as one route.
A specific coastal trail in Moutmarka is about 3 km long, marked in blue and runs from Mostranda to Skåebukta. The terrain is rocky and often windy. These details give you a clear idea of the distance, endpoints and terrain before you add the trail to your plans.
Via Ferrata Tjøme is a climbing route on Tjøme with views of the skerries in Færder National Park. The four-hour climbing tour includes exposed rappelling sections and ends with a ride on a zipline. This makes it quite different from the hiking trails described above: the focus here is on climbing, rappelling and the zipline ride.
Historic and Cultural Sites
Tjøme Church is a Neo-Gothic stone and brick long church. It was built in 1866 on the site of an earlier medieval church. Elements of the old stone church have been preserved, including an altarpiece carved by Abel Schrøder between 1670 and 1676 and a pulpit from the same period. The site brings together 19th-century architectural history and preserved furnishings from the 17th century.
Gamle Ormelet is now primarily run as a gallery and concert venue for locals and summer visitors. At Verdens Ende, the Seaman’s Wife monument commemorates the women who waited at home, longing for their sailors to return. The Vippefyret there is a replica built in 1932 from stones from Tjøme’s local beaches.
Torås Fort also combines history with a clear visiting condition: the decommissioned coastal fort is open to visitors year-round in its outdoor areas. The museum and museum café are open on weekends during the summer. If you plan to visit the museum or café, check the opening hours in advance.
Visitor Centre and the Wider Natural Landscape
The visitor centre for Færder National Park is located at Verdens Ende, on the southern tip of Tjøme. Its 360-degree panoramic room offers views of the Vippefyret, Færder Lighthouse, the skerries and the national park landscape. The centre shares information about the national park through exhibitions, family-friendly activities, guided experiences and educational programmes.
The wider area of Færder National Park includes habitats such as deciduous forests, coastal pine forests, coastal meadows and traditional hay meadows, as well as kelp and seagrass beds. This puts the view at Verdens Ende in the context of the diverse natural environment of the entire park.
POUR is located in central Tjøme, right next to Vinmonopolet. It hosts themed evenings featuring wine tastings, beer tastings, workshops and knitting evenings; everyone is welcome. This adds a different kind of activity to the choice of natural and cultural sites.
