Discover Veierland: Coast, Island Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Veierland
Veierland is a car-free island with gravel roads winding through hilly countryside, open fields, forests and meadows. The island offers views of the sea and the archipelago. When planning your stay, it’s worth deciding what you’d most like to focus on: would you rather hike or cycle, spend time on the coast, or explore historic sites?
Getting around by ferry, bicycle and on foot
The M/F Jutøya ferry connects Veierland with Tenvik on Nøtterøy and Engø near Sandefjord. Since the ferry service is part of planning your trip, it’s a good idea to check the latest timetable in advance. Free bicycles are available to borrow at both ferry terminals; availability may vary by season. Veierland is also part of national cycling routes. The combination of a car-free island and bicycle access is appealing to anyone planning to explore on two wheels as well.
If you prefer to get around on foot, Veierland has well-marked hiking trails. The historic Tunsbergleden Pilgrim Route runs through Veierland and Nøtterøy along the western side of the Oslofjord. Along the way, the route combines cultural history with coastal landscapes and nature experiences; traces of the Middle Ages, the Viking Age and the Iron Age can be found along the trail. Tunsbergleden is marked throughout. Even so, it’s worth checking the latest route information before setting out, as route details and signage may change.
A local hiking map guide can help you explore the cultural landscape of archipelago coastline, forest and farmland. Check whether the map is available before your trip. That way, you can plan your route around the landscapes that interest you most rather than focusing on just one viewpoint.
Coast and outdoor stays
Kjølholmen is a large outdoor recreation area with smooth coastal rocks. There are good opportunities for camping there, both on the headland and on a grassy area farther inland. If you plan to camp there, check the local rules and conditions in advance. Hvervodden is considered Veierland’s best bathing beach and has a lovely sandy shore. Kjølholmen and Hvervodden offer different coastal scenery: smooth rocks in the recreation area and sand at the bathing beach.
Museum, church and maritime history
Rispestua at Albyveien 23 is now Veierland’s local museum. Veierland Church is a long church dating from 1905. Both places offer a tangible connection to the island’s history, while Oslebakksundet recalls its maritime past: from the 16th century until the late 19th century, it served as a harbour for sailing ships.
The former school is also connected with art and accommodation. Kunstledhytta is located in the school building on Veierland, which has been divided into accommodation, a gallery and a studio belonging to artists Jacek and Ellen Karlowicz. If you plan to include the accommodation or gallery in your trip, check the latest operating details in advance.
Villa Veierland is a café, shop and garden restaurant where beer and whisky tastings are held. The events on offer may vary by season. So, if you want to include a tasting in your plans, check the current programme before your trip. With these different options, you can shape your stay around your interests—whether you spend your time on the trails, on the coast or at the island’s cultural sites.
