Nevlunghamn – Harbour, Cultural Landscape and Coastal Trails
Accommodation in Nevlunghamn
Nevlunghamn is a fishing village with small white houses, views of the Skagerrak and fishing boats and sailboats in the harbour. The harbour is small and easy to explore; you can take a walk there or sit on a bench. There is also a designated cultural landscape and the Kyststien, which passes through Nevlunghamn. The village thus combines local maritime history with coastal trails and nearby landscapes.
Harbour and Maritime History
The harbour has long been part of everyday life in the fishing village. Nevlunghamn has had an organised fish landing site since the late 19th century. Fishermen also sold some of their catch directly from their boats to customers. The village was also an old pilot and customs station. Fish landings and direct sales on the one hand, and pilot and customs duties on the other, illustrate different aspects of its maritime history.
The easy-to-explore harbour also offers a convenient place to stop by the water, even for a short visit: visitors can take a walk or sit on a bench. The combination of fishing boats and sailboats, white houses and views of the Skagerrak shapes the character of the village. If you are choosing a hotel primarily for a coastal destination with maritime history, you can consider Nevlunghamn from that perspective.
Cultural Landscape and Buildings
Nevlunghamn is designated as a cultural landscape of regional and national conservation value. The settlement comprises around 70 buildings that together evoke the coastal culture of Vestfold. This reflects the village as a whole: it is not one individual building, but the combination of the buildings that contributes to this characterisation.
One notable example is Loshuset. The entire building, including its interior, has remained unchanged since around 1905. Rekefabrikken in Vadboholmen has a different history: from 1983 to 1993, it operated under the name “Rekefabrikken Galleri og Industrimuseum”. It was later also used as a gallery and for concerts. These details describe different phases in the building’s history; they do not indicate how it is used today.
The Kyststien and the Surrounding Landscape
The 35-kilometre-long Kyststien passes through Nevlunghamn and is reachable from there within a few minutes. The exact walking time may vary depending on your starting point; trail conditions can also change locally. In the wider region, the Kyststien is considered Norway’s oldest coastal hiking trail. It was completed in 1991. Mølen can be reached on foot from Nevlunghamn via the Kyststien and remains a destination nearby, rather than part of the village.
Mølen combines archaeological and natural features. There are 230 burial mounds dating from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age. In addition, 316 bird species have been recorded at Mølen, and more than 100 different types of rock can be found there. Mølen is part of a UNESCO Global Geopark and is protected. At this destination, prehistoric traces, documented bird species and diverse geology can be found side by side.
The Kyststien also passes through the distinctive Saltstein landscape. Here you will find rugged cliffs, numerous headlands of volcanic origin and deep ravines. The rocks were smoothed and polished by glaciers during the last Ice Age. The waters off Saltstein are considered one of Norway’s best surfing areas; conditions depend on the weather. This landscape offers a different focus from Nevlunghamn’s harbour and building history.
