Rail connections, trails and local history give you practical bearings for a stay in Skoppum. If you are looking for a hotel at your destination, these topics can help you match your travel plans to the places and connections that interest you.

Rail and bus as points of reference

Skoppum railway station is on the Vestfold Line. Trains run from there towards Oslo S, Gardermoen, Eidsvoll, Larvik and Skien. This makes the station an important point of reference when planning your arrival or onward train journeys. Train services and departures can change, so check the current timetable before travelling.

There is also a bus connection from the station to the centre of Horten, 7 km away. A new walking and cycling path runs along Rv. 19 from the new Skoppum station eastwards towards the centre. The path provides a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists. The bus and the path offer different ways to get your bearings between Skoppum and the centre of Horten. Check current bus services before travelling and the path conditions before setting out.

Former railway line and open countryside

The former Horten Line is still visible at Skoppum station: the old track lies at ground level there and continues south before becoming a walking and cycling path. The walking and cycling path between Skoppum and Borre was created shortly after the track was removed in 2008. It runs through flat, open agricultural countryside. This means that both the railway line’s history and the landscape along the path are part of finding your way around Skoppum.

Hillforts and traces of local history

Adalsborgen, also known as Borgåsen, is a hillfort in Skoppum and one of three hillforts in Horten municipality. It is considered one of the most outstanding examples of hillforts in Vestfold. Reirborgen is the smallest of the three sites; remains of a defensive wall are visible on the southern edge of the hill. The comparison highlights two different aspects of local history: Adalsborgen’s traditional significance and the visible wall remains at Reirborgen.

The Reirborgen Trail passes Viulsrød. The Swiss House is associated with the shoemaker Marinius Wiulsrød, who lived there; the building also served as the area’s first schoolhouse. There are good parking facilities by Skoppum Idrettsanlegg, as well as a smaller car park at the southern end of the trail. As parking arrangements may change, check local conditions before travelling there.

Horten as a wider destination

In the wider destination of Horten, coastal paths, historic sites and museums complement a visit to Skoppum. The continuous coastal path in Horten runs from Ă…sgĂĄrdstrand to Falkensten. Cycle Route 1 starts at Horten ferry port and follows the coastal path to Ă…sgĂĄrdstrand. The disused Horten Line was converted there into a walking and cycling path that is easily accessible to cyclists and wheelchair users.

Other cultural destinations in Horten include Karljohansvern, a national fortification, and the Fortress Trail, with 31 information stations. The Naval Museum is one of the oldest naval museums in the world; visitors can board the gunboat KNM Blink and the submarine KNM Utstein. These destinations are part of the wider destination of Horten and should be distinguished from the local trails and hillforts in Skoppum. When planning, you can decide whether to focus on the railway station, countryside and local history in Skoppum, or also include Horten’s coastal and museum destinations.
