Kristiansand between coastal paths and culture
Accommodation in Kristiansand
Kristiansand offers several distinct ways to shape your stay: paths by the water, outdoor recreation, and art, music and history. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can start by considering which of these interests best suits your trip. The places below show the different ways you can spend your time in Kristiansand.
Coastal paths and views
The waterfront promenades in Kristiansand stretch for 2.8 km along the city’s shoreline. On Odderøya, a walk of about 3 km follows signposted paths to views of the eastern harbour, Kristiansholm Fortress and the leisure boat marinas. The two distances are similar, but describe different experiences: one follows the urban shoreline, while the other combines a walk with views of the harbour, fortress and marinas. These offer two specific ways to choose a walk based on its theme.
Outdoor recreation and parkland
Baneheia focuses on outdoor activities. The area has paths and cross-country ski trails, viewpoints, swimming beaches, bathing rafts and toilets. One ski trail is 2.2 km long and lit; in Kristiansand, hiking, jogging and cross-country skiing are possible in Baneheia all year round. There are also many options for visitors with a pushchair or wheelchair. If you want to use a particular facility, it may be helpful to check its current status shortly before your visit.
Ravnedalen offers a different kind of landscape: a marshy wetland was transformed into a park with landscaped natural features, ponds, paths and numerous plant species. While paths, ski trails and various recreational opportunities are the focus at Baneheia, the designed parkland shapes the experience at Ravnedalen. When planning, you can therefore choose between opportunities for exercise and a park with ponds and a wide variety of plant species.
Art, music and culture
On Odderøya stands Kunstsilo, an award-winning former grain silo transformed into a centre for art and cultural experiences. Its former use and present-day cultural role give the place two distinct sides. Kunstsilo offers guided tours every day; check the schedule before your trip.
The Kilden Performing Arts Centre houses a symphony orchestra, theatre and cultural activities under one roof. Kilden Kultur plans and presents guest performances and concerts to complement its in-house artistic companies. In Kristiansand, Kilden stages 900 performances, concerts and events every year; the annual programme may change. Alongside guided tours, a variety of stage and concert formats therefore offer cultural experiences.
Traces of history
Kristiansholm Fortress was built between 1662 and 1672 to defend the city’s eastern harbour. On Odderøya, remnants of old defensive ramparts, a powder magazine and an old isolation hospital have been preserved. The island was once a naval base and is now a recreational area. A walk on Odderøya therefore combines views of the harbour and fortress with other historical features of the island.
This selection can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: the shoreline and harbour views, paths and bathing spots, landscaped parkland, or culture and history.
