Vestbygd: Coastal culture and nature on Lista
Accommodation in Vestbygd
Vestbygd lies by the sea on the flat part of Lista. Its local character includes maritime history, the building history of Vestbygda Chapel, and nature interpretation at the Lista wetland system. The themes range from boats and coastal culture to a precisely dated church chronology and the landscape with its wetlands.
Maritime history in Borhaug
At the Listeskøyta Coastal Culture Centre, visitors can go aboard the ship “Linda,” built in 1907. The centre also displays the escape boat “VA-92L” from the Second World War. The exhibitions cover cargo shipping, fishing, and shipwrecks. Concrete boats are thus presented alongside broader themes in coastal history.
The Lista Coastal Culture Centre in Borhaug presents the history of building Lister boats and Lister cutters. This boatbuilding was carried out on Lista from 1850 for more than 100 years; the boatbuilding tradition spread along the Norwegian coast. This adds a broader perspective on boatbuilding over time to the encounter with individual vessels: it is not just about a construction year or an exhibit, but about an activity carried out for over a century and its spread.
Vestbygda Chapel: construction and chronology
Vestbygda Chapel in Borhaug is a wooden long church. Construction was completed in 1907, but the building could not initially be used for religious purposes because it lacked an altar area, and it was not consecrated until 1909. Completion and consecration were two years apart and mark different stages in the building’s history.
The chronology begins even earlier: on 14 November 1906, a sealed steel box was placed beneath the tower by Provost Koren. It contained a Bible, papers, chapel drawings, and current coins; the box remains unopened. The deposit preceded the completion of construction and the consecration, adding a concrete detail to the building’s history.
Wetlands, nature, and traces of older cultures
The Lista Wetland Visitor Centre shares knowledge about the Lista wetland system and develops exhibitions and information resources about it. It offers all visitors opportunities to experience nature, provides advice on using nature, and encourages people to get to know and visit Lista’s natural environment. Unlike the maritime collections, the focus here is on interpreting the wetlands and experiencing nature.
Bronze Age royal tombs are also part of Vestbygd’s historical picture. They reach far back before the chapel was built and complement the church and coastal culture with an older period.
Farsund: landscape and protected areas
In the Farsund destination, the Listastrendene Landscape Protection Area was established in 1987 to preserve a distinctive natural and cultural landscape with special beach types. Its conservation values include geology, botany, zoology, and cultural history. The Lista wetland system was granted Ramsar status in 1996. More than 400 bird species have been observed on Lista; the bird protection areas safeguard important stopover, breeding, and wintering grounds.
