You can explore Konsmo as you plan your trip through several points of interest: local history at Det Gamle Posthuset, the history of the child migrants at Barnevandrersenteret, and Barnevandrerstien. There is also Konsmoparken in the town centre by the Audna. This lets you choose between exhibitions, a hiking trail and an outdoor area for play and recreation.

Local history at Det Gamle Posthuset

Det Gamle Posthuset is centrally located in Konsmo and is now used as a local heritage museum. The house originally belonged to a farm and is believed to have been built around 1750. The exhibition includes, among other things, period furniture, photographs and a dedicated section on railway construction. The museum thus offers a range of insights into the history of the area.

The attic houses an exhibition on the history of the famous and legendary master thief Ole Høiland. According to tradition, he is said to have been imprisoned there and to have escaped from Norwegian prisons eleven times. The account is presented as tradition and complements the other exhibition topics in the house.

Barnevandrersenteret and the child migrants

Barnevandrersenteret is a small former crofter’s cottage with three small rooms, furnished with information and photographs about local child migrants. The exhibition also tells how people in Vest-Agder lived more than 100 years ago and how they learned to survive. It therefore combines the history of local child migrants with a broader look at living conditions in the region at the time. For those hiking parts of Barnevandrerstien, the exhibition is a natural stop along the way.

Barnevandrerstien: full route and stage

Barnevandrerstien passes through Konsmo and stretches from the far west to the far east of the Agder region. The route is 136 kilometres long in total and is divided into seven stages suitable for day hikes. One specific section is the third stage, from Konsmo to Laudal: it is 11 kilometres long and is subtitled “Salmon Centre and Cultural Landscape”.

The full route and an individual stage offer two different scales for your planning. The 136 kilometres refer to the entire trail, while the 11 kilometres refer to the stage from Konsmo to Laudal. If you are interested in hiking part of Barnevandrerstien, this gives you a specifically named section within the longer route.

Konsmoparken by the Audna

Konsmoparken is located in the centre of Konsmo by the Audna and is a publicly secured outdoor recreation area. It is equipped for play, exercise, spending time in nature and recreation. Most of the park has been designed for universal accessibility and adapted for wheelchair users. These uses give the park a different focus from the exhibitions and hiking trail: here, exercise and spending time outdoors take centre stage.
