Discover Evenskjer on the Tjeldsund
Accommodation in Evenskjer
Evenskjer lies on the Tjeldsund between Harstad and Narvik. Sámi art and Skånland Church are at the heart of the village; nearby, you’ll also find historic cultural sites and hiking and cross-country skiing trails. The E10 also makes Evenskjer part of a longer road journey. When choosing a destination, you can consider local culture, activities in the surrounding area and continuing along the road as distinct priorities.
Culture in Evenskjer
Várdobáiki’s facilities in Evenskjer include a museum and a gallery. They showcase Sámi art from the surrounding area and other regions. Várdobáiki also works to preserve and develop Sámi language, history, culture and community life in the region. The museum and gallery are open Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Check opening hours before your visit.
Skånland Church was built in Evenskjer in 1901. It is a long church in basilica form and is one of the largest wooden churches in Northern Norway. Its year of construction and its form offer two different points of reference: 1901 places the church in its historical context, while the basilica form describes its architectural design.
Harbour and nearby cultural sites
Evenskjer’s harbour at Skjæran is a five-minute walk from the centre. There is a guest jetty operated by Skånland Båtlag. As operating arrangements can change, check the current conditions in advance. Tjeldsund Kystlag is also associated with Evenskjer: the association, formerly Skånland Kystlag, has shaped the village with numerous activities and events since it was founded in 2007.
Nearby is Steinsland Klyngetun, a traditional cluster farmstead and now a rare example of this type of settlement. It is a three-minute drive from Evenskjer. There, 2,000 objects are displayed in an authentic atmosphere dating from around 1920. The barn also houses a permanent exhibition on the municipality’s Sámi culture. The farmstead and exhibitions offer different perspectives on the settlement form, historical objects and Sámi culture.
Activities in the surrounding area and road connections
Evenskjer Løypelag maintains most of its hiking and cross-country skiing trails in the surrounding area and ensures good conditions in both summer and winter. The season makes a practical difference here: hiking and cross-country skiing are the activities mentioned for summer and winter. Check local trail conditions before setting out. Evenskjer is also a good starting point for fishing at nearby fishing spots in the Tjeldsund. Check access and local conditions before you leave.
The E10, also known as “Kong Olavs veg”, connects Evenskjer with the outer Lofoten Islands and runs all the way to the Swedish border. For a trip with several road stages, it provides a regional point of reference.
The wider Tjeldsund destination
The wider Tjeldsund destination also has cultural and natural points of interest. Tennvatn Nature Reserve has international Ramsar status. The Tjeldsund Museum is located in Stokke on Tjeldøya, in an old school building with a classroom, a teacher’s residence and a sexton’s residence dating from 1869. These destinations are part of the wider Tjeldsund destination and should be distinguished from the facilities and attractions in Evenskjer.
