If you’re looking for a hotel in Rebbenes, the places you’re interested in visiting during your stay can help guide your choice. Details for two routes can also be compared directly: they have different estimated durations and lead to different destinations.

Island, Coast and Protected Areas

Rebbenesøya is an island in the municipalities of Karlsøy and Tromsø in Troms. In the wider travel destination of Karlsøy, the Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya Landscape Protection Area forms a continuous coastal area characteristic of Troms’ coastal culture. The protected areas on the outer coast of Karlsøy are important habitats for seabirds and marine mammals, including grey seals, harbour seals, otters and various whale species.

Breivika lies in a remote location on the outer side of Rebbenesøya. Its landscape is shaped by a white sandy beach, dunes and moraines. Access depends on the weather: when conditions are suitable, it is possible to travel by boat; otherwise, the route goes over the mountain. These conditions are important to consider when planning, as Breivika is not simply a readily accessible beach outing.

The Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya Landscape Protection Area offers opportunities in both summer and winter to hike through valleys and climb high peaks. From a boat or kayak, you can fish, watch seals and whales, visit bird cliffs and experience the birdlife. A boat is required to reach most of the protected areas. The ferry to Rebbenesøya can also be part of the journey; from there, you can continue on to protected areas.

Routes and Experiences by Duration

The route from Bromes to Toftefjorden takes about one hour each way. It leads to the memorial stone where the Baalsrud March begins. Another hike goes from Løksfjordeidet via Løkstinden to Helvetestinden; the round trip is listed as taking three to four hours. Comparing the stated durations can help you plan your day, but they do not indicate the difficulty or trail conditions.

Another seasonal option is the 1.5-kilometre illuminated trail, which starts in Lillevassvika and runs through Bakdalen. It is groomed when snow conditions are suitable; the lights are switched on at set times. If you plan to use the trail, check the current lighting times and snow conditions in advance.

On Rebbenesøya, Elements Arctic Camp combines a private, personal Arctic camp experience with an overnight stay in a yurt and kayak tours through the Arctic archipelago. On a kayak tour in the dark, you may be lucky enough to see the Northern Lights from your kayak. Activities are adapted to the weather, paddling experience and your wishes.

Coastal History

The protected areas on the outer coast of Karlsøy have been inhabited since the Stone Age. Numerous eiderdown and egg-gathering sites were active there until the 1980s. The Nordkvaløya-Rebbenesøya Landscape Protection Area also preserves a rich cultural landscape, with intact cultural environments and numerous cultural heritage sites. Finds date from the Stone Age through Norse and Sámi culture to the present day. This long history of settlement is closely connected to the coastal landscape, and the historical traces are not confined to a single place.

One specific chapter in recent history concerns the M/S Bratholm. On 30 March 1943, the ship was spotted and attacked by a German minesweeper in Toftefjorden, north of Rebbenesøya. Jan Baalsrud was the only one to escape death or capture. The memorial to the event stands at the inner end of Toftefjorden. The Baalsrud March takes place every year.
