Harstad combines natural spaces and opportunities for outdoor activities with cultural offerings and a distinctive leisure complex in the city centre. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: spending time in green spaces, learning about Northern Norwegian history, seeing changing art exhibitions, or visiting the water park? The following places show different sides of Harstad and provide practical starting points for planning your trip.

Nature and outdoor activities

Folkeparken is a recreational area 1.7 km from the centre of Harstad. It is equipped for a wide range of activities year-round and is suitable for walking and cycling. In the park, Grunnvannet, Harstadvannet and Musvannet are popular destinations for swimming, fishing and hiking. This means the same recreational area offers opportunities for both outdoor activities and spending time by the lakes. When planning, you can decide whether you would prefer to explore on foot or make time to be by the water.

Harstad Bike Park is free and open to everyone. As access conditions may change, check them before visiting.

Trondenes and Northern Norwegian history

Trondenes Church stands on the Trondenes peninsula north of Harstad. It is considered the northernmost surviving medieval stone church in the world. The Trondenes Historical Center is also located on the peninsula, just outside Harstad city centre. It takes visitors on a journey through 1,000 years of Northern Norwegian history. The centre’s outdoor area includes an authentic medieval farm with reconstructed buildings. The church and museum have different focuses: one centres on a surviving medieval stone church, while the other explores the history of Northern Norway and a farm with reconstructed buildings.

Trondenes Fort is another part of Harstad’s history. Of its four batteries, only the Adolf Gun remains in a well-maintained and operational condition. Confirm its status before planning a specialist visit. In the wider Harstad destination, Trondenes Fort is open to the public only as part of guided tours.

Art and leisure in the city centre

Galleri Nord-Norge complements the historic sites with its exhibition programme. Each year, it presents between eight and twelve exhibitions, including solo and group shows by national and international artists. All art forms are represented. If you want to see a particular exhibition during your trip, check the current programme, as the selection may change.

Grottebadet is a water park inside a mountain in the heart of Harstad city centre. Among caves and waterfalls, it features water slides, water cannons, a wave pool, a diving tower, a sports pool, a therapy pool and hot tubs. This makes it different from the lakes in Folkeparken: Grottebadet focuses on water attractions and different pools, while the lakes are places for swimming, fishing and hiking. The facilities may change; check what is available before your visit.
