Discover Gratangen: fjord culture, history and hiking
Accommodation in Gratangen
Gratangen combines maritime history with cultural sites and hiking. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip here, you can focus your plans on discovering historic places, exploring the maritime heritage or spending time in the mountains. There are also practical points of reference for getting here and choosing individual excursions.
Boats, fishing and coastal culture
In the vicinity of Gratangen, at the head of the fjord in Gratangsbotn, is the North Norwegian Boat Museum. It preserves old boats, fishing equipment and gear as maritime cultural heritage. The collection dates back to 1928, when Arctic Ocean skipper Bertheus Eilivsen exhibited his family’s old Nordland boats in a boathouse on Årstein. The museum displays Nordland boats of different sizes, from smaller rowboats to larger boats such as a fembøring. The collection’s development and its exhibits today offer two different perspectives on the maritime heritage.
The fishing villages of Laberg and Foldvik also preserve facilities associated with maritime activities from the 19th and 20th centuries, testifying to a long-established fishing industry. In the vicinity of Gratangen, Foldvik has historic quays, racks for drying fishing nets, an old general store and signposted cultural heritage sites. The area is considered a distinctive cultural landscape; a walk can take you between the old quays and the marked heritage sites. This offers a way to connect the history of fishing with the preserved features of the village.
Cultural history and memorial sites
In the municipality of Gratangen, Skifte is considered a particularly typical example of the “meeting of the three peoples”: Norwegians, Sámi and Kvens. Gammen på Skifte is a Sámi kroksperregamme, also called a bælljegoahti. The historical account that Sámi families from neighbouring communities also lived in such gamme at Skifte reflects this building style. Gratangen Church was consecrated on 27 February 1972 by Monrad Norderval, Bishop of Nord-Hålogaland. Its sail-shaped tower symbolises Gratangen’s strong connection to the sea. A model of the Arctic Ocean ship “Nyken” hangs inside the church.
The memorial sites differ in scale and purpose: the municipality has a total of eleven memorial stones or monuments to the fallen and to units involved in the fighting of 1940. Nearby, in Gratangsbotn, the memorial grove with several memorial stones was officially inaugurated by King Olav on 27 May 1990. Also in the municipality, Ă…rstein Cemetery opened in 1882. At Kvernmoen, there are Stone Age rock carvings that indicate the area has been inhabited for thousands of years.
Hikes and special excursions
The nearby Snolkehytta is a moderately challenging mountain hike through marshland, birch forest and open mountain terrain. Along the way, views open up over Gratangen, Gratangseidet, Kvernmoen and the surrounding mountains. The route combines different landscape sections with views across several named places. As trail conditions vary by season, check them locally before setting out.
Husky Isogaisa in Kvernmoen combines dog sledding for guests with Sámi cultural experiences, a lavvu, campfires and storytelling. The combination of activities and culture sets this experience apart from a hike, where the terrain and views take centre stage. Check current participation options with the provider in advance.
Nearby, at Little Jamaica in Grøsnes, at the entrance to Gratangen, stands Morgan’s Ship: a large wooden sculpture with a picnic area. The artwork brings together art, voluntary effort and the fjord landscape. The picnic area there is a good place to take a break while visiting the sculpture. Foldvik is also home to Foldvik Brygger Restaurant, located in a historic quay complex; it serves casual dishes, seafood and seasonal food. The menu and opening arrangements may change.
Getting here and planning in the municipality
A 380-metre-long bridge over the Ă…rsteinstraumen connects the northern and southern parts of Gratangen municipality. Entur is recommended for planning a bus trip to Gratangen, as the region crosses county borders and public transport should be planned across them. Check current connections before travelling; this recommendation is not a substitute for up-to-date trip planning.
Gratangen municipality does not have its own tourist information office. During opening hours, you can contact the municipality’s service centre; as service arrangements may change, check the current contact options in advance. These planning steps can help you tailor your trip to your interests: the maritime collection and fishing history, cultural and memorial sites, or hiking and views. This can help you decide which themes to focus on when looking for a hotel and planning your days.
