Nordkjosbotn: River Trails, Hikes and History
Accommodation in Nordkjosbotn
Nordkjosbotn lies at the innermost end of Balsfjord, where the Nordkjoselva (Dápmotjohka) flows into the fjord. The E6 and E8 meet here, and the E6 runs through the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Nordkjosbotn, the places you plan to visit can help you choose the focus of your trip: the river area, hikes and local history offer different points of interest.
Elveparken and the River Area
Elveparken is an 850-metre blue hiking trail in Gárgán (Nordkjosbotn). At the start of the trail is an accessible floating jetty. At the end, there is a fire pit and a shelter. There is a car park for Elveparken right next to Vollan Gjestestue.
The recreation area along the Nordkjoselva is often used for short walks, fishing and paddling. In the section close to the centre, you will find an accessible path, seating and a shelter. Part of the recreation area can be used in winter as a lit ski trail or walking path. The options therefore vary by section and season: walking, fishing and paddling are among the listed recreational activities, while lighting is a winter option.
Hikes and Getting Around
For the Storvatnet hike, there is a parking bay after turning off the E6 towards Storfjord at Nordkjosbotn. A clearly marked hiking trail runs the entire way to Storvatnet.
The starting point for the Stavbergan hike can be reached from the centre of Nordkjosbotn; there is a good car park at the municipal building. From Stavbergan, there are views over Nordkjosbotn and Balsfjord. The area has rocky knolls, cliffs and caves. One practical point for early winter and spring: you may need traction cleats on this hike.
The Kjusakdalen hike is nearby. From Nordkjosbotn, follow the road past the turnoff to Nordkjosbotn VGS to a car park about four kilometres away. The route follows a good path without any very steep sections. At the destination, Elvegreinen, there is a table with a bench and a fire pit. The hike can thus be distinguished from those in Nordkjosbotn by its location and the described character of the route.
Local History and Dining
Vollan Gjestestue opened on 4 July 1948. During the Second World War, the building was used as an officers’ mess. Today, the guesthouse continues to serve traditional homemade food; the menu may change. The history of the building and its current food offering are two distinct aspects of the place: the date refers to its opening, while the food is a current offering.
