Discover Skien: Culture, the Canal and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Skien
Skien offers a range of options for planning your trip: cultural history at Brekkeparken and Kapitelberget, boat trips on the Telemark Canal, and trails and activities at Skien Fritidspark. You can tailor your stay to the topics that interest you most.
Cultural history at Brekkeparken and Kapitelberget
Brekkeparken includes an open-air museum, a manor house and a modern museum with changing exhibitions. Guided tours take visitors through the manor house’s main building, the farmhouses in the park and the new museum building. The farmhouses convey Telemark’s cultural history as well as earlier living conditions and building traditions. The park also has a playground. If you are especially interested in historic buildings and everyday life, you will find several different ways to explore these topics here.
Søndre Brekke estate offers views of Skien city centre, the Skienselva river and the Telemark Canal. The manor house was home to Niels Aall, who was a minister in 1814. Brekkeparken therefore offers a look at both the history of the house and its residents, and Telemark’s rural building traditions. The modern museum building complements this historic setting with changing exhibitions.
Kapitelberget is a popular recreation and walking area. It is home to the ruins of a 12th-century crypt church, and the area also includes a protected fossil coral reef that is 430 million years old. The site combines opportunities for walking with two distinct historical perspectives: a medieval church ruin and a much older geological formation.
The Telemark Canal and the fish ladder
The M/S Victoria and M/S Henrik Ibsen sail on the Telemark Canal between Skien and Dalen. Day trips and boat tours with overnight stays are available from Skien. Eight lock complexes, with a total of 18 lock chambers, raise boats and passengers 72 metres along the route from Skien to Dalen. The locks and the boat route give the canal trip a distinctive technical and geographical character. If you would like to include a trip in your plans, check the latest sailing times and dates in advance.
A modern, universally designed fish ladder is located in central Skien. It enables threatened and other important aquatic species to bypass the power stations in the city centre and reach their natural spawning and nursery grounds upstream. It makes a suitable excursion for schools and families, as well as for people interested in freshwater biology and river ecosystems. The fish ladder is also a highlight along the popular “Bryggevannet rundt” walking route.
Walking trails and activities at Skien Fritidspark
Skien Fritidspark has trails for a range of activity plans, from short walks to longer training hikes. The illuminated, wheelchair-accessible trails are one kilometre, 2.5 kilometres and five kilometres long. There are also four adapted rest areas along the illuminated cross-country ski trail. The trail lengths and available rest areas are useful reference points when planning your time in the park.
In winter, the activity park at Skien Fritidspark becomes a 12,000-square-metre ice rink. The climbing park has seven courses of varying difficulty and a 220-metre dual zipline. The longest zipline in the climbing park is accessible to people with disabilities. These details relate to different attractions in the park: a seasonal winter area, climbing courses and a zipline.
At Skien Fritidspark, you can book a nature trail or quiz, or an excursion to a shelter with lunch outdoors. Check availability in advance. If you prefer a guided cultural walk, the cultural trail starts at Bakkestranda in central Skien. The Skotfoss Trail is a 3.7-kilometre cultural walking route that starts at the Løveid locks and features 15 illustrated information boards. Its length, starting point and information boards make this a clearly defined alternative for anyone who wants to combine a walk with cultural topics.
