Cultural Landscape and History

Hjartdal Church is centrally located in Hjartdalsbygda and is a log church built in 1809. Its fine wood carvings are a distinctive example of craftsmanship. A memorial stone beside the church commemorates the 1540 peasant uprising. Nearby, Kønnmagasinet tells the story of the old grain store, painters connected with the area and historical landscape photographs. Building history, remembrance and depictions of the landscape come together here in different ways.

Hjartdal and Svartdal are also included on Norway’s national list of particularly valuable cultural landscapes. This connection to the cultural landscape runs through a range of visitor experiences, from the history of grain cultivation to the images and motifs associated with the area.

Mill, Farming and Craftsmanship

Hjartdal bygdemylle still produces barley flour in various grades of fineness, as well as barley groats. Guided tours of the mill are available, along with a themed exhibition about farming and grain in mountain villages. It is advisable to contact the mill in advance to arrange a tour. Kulturlandskapssenteret shares knowledge about species-rich hay meadows. It welcomes groups year-round by appointment and can arrange talks, guided tours, hikes or excursions to selected nearby sites. Arrange your group visit before you arrive.

At Funnerfellen in Hjartdal, Gvammen, sheepskin rugs and other products are made with traditional leather-embossing patterns from Hjartdal and neighboring villages. The tradition behind these patterns also makes the place interesting for travelers interested in applied crafts and regional design. Group visits should be arranged in advance.
