Bamble can be explored through its coastline, historic places and trails. Here, medieval church ruins stand alongside a neo-Gothic wooden church, while forts recall different chapters of history. Coastal trails, beaches and nature reserves offer other points of interest. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these differences in mind: one excursion might focus on buildings and history, another on the coastal landscape or a longer route.

Churches, Forts and History

Next to Bamble Church are the restored ruins of Olavskirken, a medieval church dating from around 1150. Today’s Bamble Church is a neo-Gothic wooden church, consecrated in 1845; its tower dates from 1902. Inside are two large altarpieces by the parish priest Gustav A. Lammers. The ruins and the church building thus mark different periods of local history in one specific place.

The Oldtidsveien hiking trail also starts here. It was established and marked by the Bamble Historical Association. Information boards along the trail cover prehistory and more recent history. The prehistoric road is described as the counterpart of today’s E18. So the trail not only passes through a landscape but also touches on the long-standing importance of routes and connections.

Trolldalen Coastal Fort was built by the Germans in 1941 during the Second World War. After their departure in 1943, the Norwegian military did not take over the fort, which is why it is considered quite unique. Bunkers, passageways and gun emplacements can still be seen up close, and the site offers panoramic views of the archipelago. The fort can be reached via Valleveien and from the sea.

Tangen Fort also preserves military traces in the landscape: tunnels, bunkers and cannon foundations from the Second World War are visible there. The area was opened to the public in 1998. Those interested in nature and geology will also find a popular hiking area at Tangen Fort, in a nature reserve with fossils and calcareous bedrock. Eik Gård, part of the Bamble Museum, and the Fishing Museum in Cudrio Sjøbod in Langesund provide additional cultural-history destinations. If you plan to visit the museum in Sjøbod, it is a good idea to check the current opening hours.

Coastal Landscapes and Trails

The Kyststien in Bamble is 60 kilometres long in total and runs between Stathelle and the border near Fossing in Kragerø. For cyclists, the Skjærgårdsruta offers another option: the cycling route runs for 58 kilometres from Langesund to Kragerø. The section from Langesund to Valle is 21 kilometres long. These details help distinguish the two routes by mode of travel and distance; they offer different ways to experience the coast.

On Langøya, most of the island is designated as a landscape protection area, and several rare plant species grow there. The coastal circular trail recommends a detour to the Langøytangen Lighthouse at the southern tip of the island. The Røsskleiva Nature Reserve has an extensive network of hiking trails. Bamble is also part of the Gea Norvegica UNESCO Global Geopark—a fitting regional setting for an area whose landscape also features calcareous bedrock and fossils.

There are several different coastal spots to enjoy time by the water. Krogshavn in Langesund is a family-friendly recreation area with benches, jetties, swimming steps, lawns, stretches of bare rock and several sandy beaches. It also has a large car park, a parkour park and free-to-use barbecue areas; the area is open to everyone. Rognstranda, meanwhile, has a long, gently sloping sandy beach, as well as small paved paths, lawns, car parks, bathing barrels and a swimming ladder. These specific beach and landscape features give you a helpful guide when choosing a stretch of coast for your stay.

A Local Connection to the Coast

Langesund is known for its “Langesundsreker” (Langesund shrimp). There is also a fish shop along the coastal route. Together with the Fishing Museum in Cudrio Sjøbod, this gives the coast a local culinary and cultural side too. So you can get to know Bamble not only through viewpoints and hiking routes, but also through the places and subjects connected with life by the sea.
