Østby combines a long farming history with a landscape shaped by agriculture. The cycling route, ski cabin, and guided activities are located in different areas.

Landscape and Routes

Østby’s south-facing farmland made grain cultivation possible. North of the settlement, the outlying area had abundant forests and grazing land. Historically, fishing and hunting were also possible there. The landscape therefore differs between the farmland in the south and the forested, pasture-rich outlying area in the north.

In the immediate area around the destination, the signposted blue cycling route 5 runs from Ås to Aunemarka. It is about 23 kilometres long, follows FV 990 towards Østby, and then continues through Østbymarka. Also nearby, in Østbymarka in Tydal, is Røvassbu, a cosy ski cabin.

Farm Shop and Baked Goods

Sjursgård Vestre runs a farm shop at Østbyvegen 105. Østby Gårdsbakeri makes homemade flatbrød, lemser, and lapper. If you plan to visit in person, check opening hours and visiting arrangements in advance.

Traces of Farm History

The Østby farm existed as early as the Middle Ages. A spearhead and an arrowhead, probably dating from the Viking Age, are associated with it. More recently, the farms of Østby jointly built a sawmill on the Nøsterbekken stream by Gammelvollsjøen; it was in use until around 1960.

Activities in the Wider Area

In the wider region, Fjellguiden Tydal AS offers guided mountain hikes in Sylan and the surrounding mountains. Its activities also include guided ice fishing on Essand and Nesjøen. For Essandsjøen, the company rents 15-foot boats from Nøsteråa. As the availability of guided tours and boats may change, check the offers with the provider in advance.

The Wider Destination of Tydal

Tydal is a mountain settlement at the foot of the Syl massif, on the border between Trøndelag and Sweden, and along county road 705 between Røros and Stjørdal. Most of the Sylan mountain area lies within the municipality of Tydal; it also extends into Meråker, Selbu, Røros, and Sweden.

The wider destination of Tydal includes the Kistafoss power station, a power station museum with an exhibition in the engine hall. On display are a guardroom, machinery, objects and tools from the period of operation, and an authentic kitchen interior from the time electricity was introduced in Tydal. Visits to the power station can be arranged by calling 917 55 677; check the number before travelling.

Tydal Church is a listed wooden church dating from 1696 and a so-called wayside church. Every summer, it is open for visitors to view the wall paintings; check the current opening dates before travelling. Henfallet is another striking feature of the landscape: the waterfall is 90 metres high and is considered the highest waterfall in Trøndelag.
