Snillfjord: Culture, hiking and winter tours in the surrounding area
Accommodation in Snillfjord
The area around Snillfjord offers cultural sites, hiking opportunities and seasonal destinations for ski touring. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, the following places and activities can help you plan your days around cultural, hiking or winter interests.
Krokstadøra: location and culture
Krokstadøra lies at the innermost end of the Snillfjord, along Fylkesvei 714. Snillfjord Church, a wooden long-plank church built in 1899, is also located in Krokstadøra. Its year of construction, material and architectural style give you specific points of reference for a cultural and historical visit in the area around your destination.
A statue of Martin Stokken stands in the centre of Krokstadøra. The central area is designated as a Tusenårssted, or millennium site. A work of art by Åse Liv Hauan in the centre symbolises 10,000 years of settlement. In Krokstadøra, you will therefore encounter various public cultural references: a statue, a designated millennium site and a work of art with an explicitly stated historical theme. The artwork refers to a long period of settlement, while the statue focuses on Martin Stokken as an individual.
Hiking trails in the area
A municipal article from 2021 refers to a hiking booklet describing almost 50 kilometres of marked trails starting from Songlia and Fjellkjøsen. As this article is more than a year old, check current trail conditions before setting out. Parts of Grytdalen are a nature reserve. The Grytdalen hiking booklet recommends Svarttjønnhytta and Hjortdalshytta for visits and overnight stays; this recommendation is reported in a municipal article from 2021. Check in advance whether visits and overnight stays are currently possible.
A municipal route plan from 2025 lists an existing, well-marked hiking route over Krokstadvarden and Brevikvarden; parking is available at Skogly ungdomshus. The route passing over both peaks provides a specifically named route option alongside the trail information from Songlia and Fjellkjøsen.
Seasonal ski touring
In winter, there are opportunities for ski touring around Krokstadøra Næringspark; snow conditions vary by season. The 2025 municipal route plan names Steinvassbua as a seasonal ski touring destination and notes that there is good parking. The path up to Dyrlikammen is not marked. This clearly distinguishes the ascent from the well-marked route over Krokstadvarden and Brevikvarden.
The route plan also describes Steinvassbua as a cabin for skiers with a self-service kiosk and notes that refreshments are served on certain days. Check current kiosk and refreshment availability before visiting. When planning winter activities, you can distinguish between the ski touring opportunities around Krokstadøra Næringspark, the seasonal destination Steinvassbua and the unmarked path up to Dyrlikammen.
