Selbustrand lies on the northern shore of Selbusjøen, near its eastern end. The rock art group, the trail network at Selbuskogen Ski Centre and a mapped section of the Romboleden offer different points to consider when planning a trip. Conditions on the lake and in the mountains are especially important when visiting the rock art. At the ski centre, seasonal summer activities may also be possible in addition to cross-country skiing, but only by prior arrangement.

Rock art by Selbusjøen

Twenty engraved stones are now known in the Selbustrand rock art group. Most were found on the Solem and Grøtte farms. This links the rock art to a specific place on the northern shore and a history of discoveries that also includes these two farms.

Many of the stones are accessible only briefly each spring: after the ice on Selbusjøen has melted, but before the snowmelt in the mountains really begins. So don’t plan your visit based solely on a fixed spring date; take both conditions into account. The regulated water level of Selbusjøen means that the rock art stones are flooded every year. This short springtime window and annual flooding are part of what visitors can expect at this cultural site.

Cross-country skiing and seasonal activities at the ski centre

Selbuskogen Ski Centre offers 75 kilometres of groomed cross-country trails for ski tours. From there, groomed trails lead east to Gråvatna, Kvitfjellhytta, Holman, Vekta, Prestøyan and Ånvatna. The distance and named destinations provide different points of reference: the extent of the trail network and its direction. Trail grooming can vary by season.

In summer, Selbuskogen Ski Centre may be used for hiking, roller skiing, inline skating and skateboarding by arrangement with the board. Use is subject to the board’s approval. If you plan any of these activities, arrange this in advance. This makes it clear which activities may be possible in summer, without implying that the centre is freely available for use.

Pilgrimage route and church in Selbustrand

The Romboleden includes a mapped section of pilgrimage route from Skarvdörrsfjället to Selbustrand. For travellers interested in pilgrimage routes, this identifies a specific section with Selbustrand as its destination. Selbustrand Church is also located on the northern shore of Selbusjøen.

The central furnishings of Selbustrand Church also offer a historical connection: apart from the organ and one bell, they date from the time the church was built. Rock art, the pilgrimage route and the church thus offer different cultural points of interest in Selbustrand. The information about the church relates to its location and furnishings, not its opening hours.

More information about the wider Selbu destination

In the wider Selbu destination, the Romboleden runs from Tydal via Selbu to Trondheim and is considered Norway’s oldest pilgrimage route. The Norwegian section passes through Neadalen to Selbu, then continues along Selbusjøen. The route through Selbu complements the mapped section mentioned for Selbustrand, but does not replace its specific description from Skarvdörrsfjället to Selbustrand.

Route information for Selbu is also important when planning a trip: the Romboleden is inadequately marked and is best suited to pilgrims familiar with using a map and compass. Check the latest route information before setting out. The wider Selbu destination is also home to Selbu Church, which lies on the Romboleden. It is one of the largest long churches in Trøndelag, originally dates from 1150 and is known for its excellent acoustics. These features belong to Selbu Church, not Selbustrand Church.
