Discover Stadsbygd
Accommodation in Stadsbygd
Stadsbygd combines rock carvings, coastal culture and historic farm buildings with a hiking section of the Kystpilegrimsleia. If you are planning a hotel stay in Stadsbygd, you can explore the area through several cultural and historical themes. The sights represent different periods and areas of interest. This helps you tailor your stay to the topics you would like to set aside time for while you are there.
Coastal culture and boatbuilding
The Museet Kystens Arv features exhibitions on Central Norway’s coastal culture and the use of traditional clinker-built boats. It has one of Norway’s largest collections of clinker-built square-rigged vessels. This connects the history of the coast with the craft traditions of boatbuilding. Craftspeople at the museum work on traditional boatbuilding; the craft is not only covered in exhibitions but also practised hands-on.
The south-facing museum is situated right by the waterfront. It offers activities for the whole family. Exhibition and activity programmes may vary, so check the latest information before your visit. This will help you plan for both the coastal exhibitions and the museum’s hands-on craft activities.
Rock carvings and historical traces
The Helleristningene på Stykket consist of five elk figures carved into a rock surface around 6,000 years ago. The rock art offers insights into the ideas, social structures, rituals and beliefs of people at that time. Visitors are invited to see them on site. The carvings thus lead back to a distant past, distinct from Stadsbygd’s later building and local histories.
Two marked burial mounds are still preserved in the fields of Rein farm. Historian Gerhard Schøning’s count offers a different perspective in time and place: in 1773, he counted a total of 78 burial mounds along the fjord in Stadbygda. This historical count along the fjord contrasts with the two marked mounds still preserved today in the fields of a particular farm.
Stadsbygd kirke was consecrated in 1842 and built next to the previous church, which burned down in 1837. Stadsbygd PrestegĂĄrd is an intact, listed manor farm with buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, at the mouth of the Prestelva. It includes a stately listed building dating from 1769. The manor farm is right next to the Museet Kystens Arv. The church, manor farm and museum thus bring together different historical and cultural themes at specific locations in Stadsbygd.
Hiking section and ferry connection
The hiking section of the Kystpilegrimsleia runs from Stadsbygd Prestegård through Berga to the Rørvik ferry terminal. From there, a ferry runs to Flakk, outside Trondheim. If you include the connection in your travel plans, check the timetable in advance. This section adds a specific hiking route and onward ferry connection to the cultural and historical themes.
