For a stay in Brekstad, you can focus on two main areas: Bystranda and cultural attractions in town, and trails through natural and cultural landscapes in Ørland. Bystranda is in the centre, right next to the Ørland Cultural Centre. The Kystpilgrimsleden Ørland begins at the express boat terminal and leads towards Austråttborgen.

Bystranda and the Town Centre

Bystranda is partly a sandy beach and has shallow water. Its location in the centre of Brekstad makes the beach a useful landmark for finding your way around town. If you are planning your stay mainly around attractions in Brekstad, you can consider Bystranda and the cultural offerings separately from trips further afield.

Cultural Attractions at the Ørland Cultural Centre

The Besøkssenter våtmark Ørland is located at the Ørland Cultural Centre, Rådhusgata 6, 7130 Brekstad. It reopened on 15 September 2026 and is one of Norway’s six authorised wetland centres. Its offerings include exhibitions, guided excursions and themed evenings.

Galleri Hans and the Hannah Ryggen-senteret are also housed at the Ørland Cultural Centre. Galleri Hans is a gallery for changing exhibitions. The exhibition “Porten til Trøndelag” is on the second floor. It presents the history of Ørland municipality, from the people who visited Klakken 10,000 to 11,000 years ago to the present day. The cultural centre also has a cinema and a library; the building is in the same complex as a transport terminal. This makes it a place where you can combine exhibition visits with practical orientation in central Brekstad.

Hiking Trails and Destinations Around Brekstad

Kystpilgrimsleden Ørland is a marked hiking trail through natural and cultural landscapes. It leads from the express boat terminal in Brekstad to Austråttborgen, passing the Hovsfjæra-Ramsar area, an internationally protected wetland rich in birdlife. A detour leads to a birdwatching tower, where you can experience birds and nature up close. Check the specific access conditions there in person.

Another marked route runs from Rusasetvatnet along the Balsnesvassdraget and back to Brekstad. From Brekstad, it is about 1.5 kilometres on foot to Ørland kirke and about 4 kilometres to Austråttborgen. Ørland kirke is Fosen’s only intact medieval stone church. The different distances make it easy to distinguish nearby destinations from a longer excursion.

Nature and History in the Wider Destination of Ørland

In the wider destination of Ørland, the Grandefjæra Nature Reserve offers a unique perspective on the landscape: it has Norway’s largest tidal flat and consists of a mosaic of mudflats, ponds, sandy and rocky shores, seaweed ridges and seagrass meadows. There are birdwatching viewpoints at Grande, Hoøya and Rønsholmen. The Austråttlunden Protected Landscape features species-rich deciduous woodland, distinctive plant and animal life, and large oak trees. A maintained walking path there is 3.5 kilometres long; historically, Austråttlunden was the hunting ground and manor park of Austråttborgen.

The cultural history of the wider Ørland area also extends beyond Brekstad. Austrått Fort is a former German fortification with a huge five-storey gun turret. A guided tour lasting just under an hour goes underground through the entire turret, the power station and the quarters for up to 200 people. The fort also houses the “Fosen Krigshistoriske Samlinger” exhibition about the occupation years in Fosen. Austrått is one of Norway’s oldest manor estates; Austråttborgen is considered a European cultural treasure.
