Discover Fagerhaug
Accommodation in Fagerhaug
In Fagerhaug, hiking, cross-country skiing and skydiving are distinct reasons to visit. When planning, it is worth first considering the activity and the season: a prominent route leads towards Orkelsjøen, while skydiving is offered at Oppdal Airport in Fagerhaug.
Hiking and skiing on the route to Orkelsjøen
The route from Fagerhaug to Orkelsjøen through Langvelldalen is one of the area's prominent routes. In winter, the same stretch between Fagerhaug and Orkelsjøen can be travelled on skis. Snow and trail-grooming conditions vary, so the season matters when planning a specific trip.
The section between Fagerhaug and Orkelsjøhytta is not marked. According to the route description, however, it is easy to find: it first follows a mountain-farm track through Langvelldalen, then the road from Pikhaugsetrin to Orkelsjøen. As navigation conditions can change, check the route description before setting out.
For the hike through Langvelldalen and Olmdalen, the route description lists options for travelling by public transport both to the starting point in Fagerhaug and from the endpoint in Oppdal. Check current timetables, as services may change. This lets you take transport to and from the route into account as part of your planning.
Cross-country skiing and skydiving in Fagerhaug
A cross-country ski trail runs northeast from central Oppdal via Stølen to Fagerhaug. The trail network can also be accessed from the Fagerhaug side. This route layout provides another option for cross-country skiing; grooming conditions can vary by season.
Skydiving offers a different kind of activity. Skydive Oppdal is based at Oppdal Airport in Fagerhaug. The drop zone used by the NTNU Fallskjermklubb there has a one-kilometre-long runway and a large landing area.
The NTNU Fallskjermklubb usually holds two to four skydiving courses in spring and two to four in autumn; sometimes an additional summer course is offered. If you want to include a course in your trip, confirm the specific dates in advance. The usual seasonal course schedule does not replace checking the dates for a particular course.
Oppdal as a wider destination
The wider destination of Oppdal also offers cultural and historical attractions. The Vang burial ground comprises more than 900 large and small burial mounds and stone cairns. The site includes a service building, information boards, information cubes and a two-kilometre walking path. For 2026, the municipality advises against visiting because of clean-up and safety work; take this into account when planning.
The Oppdalsmuseet offers guided walks with storytelling for groups at the Vang burial ground, but only by prior request. Oppdal is also traversed by the Kongevegen, which crosses the Dovrefjell through Drivdalen to Oppdal kirke. The present-day church was built around 1650 and consecrated on 12 March 1651 by Bishop Erik Bredal.
The church's construction history offers a glimpse of its own: its baptistery has a stave structure dating from the 12th century, decorated with painted apostles. Raulåna stands by the church at Vang and was built in 1675. These historic sites and the burial ground are attractions in the wider destination of Oppdal; the hiking, cross-country skiing and skydiving opportunities in Fagerhaug are distinct travel interests.
