Discover Melhus
Accommodation in Melhus
Rock art, burial grounds and old routes give Melhus a distinct cultural and historical character; at the same time, hiking areas, ski touring and swimming spots are among the possible interests for a trip. For your stay, you can therefore focus on cultural history or outdoor activities. At Horg Bygdatun, a historic landscape meets lively cultural interpretation.
Cultural trails and historic sites
Horg Bygdatun encompasses a unique cultural environment in a landscape of great historical value. It includes rock art, burial grounds, old routes, traditional buildings and lively cultural interpretation. East of the Bygdatun is an extensive nature and cultural trail that can be followed as a circular route through the landscape. The Kulturstien begins at Horg Bygdatun in Hovin and takes you through a thousand years of history; it includes rock carvings and a chieftain’s grave. The historical themes thus range from the landscape itself to specific archaeological evidence.
On the Sagastien, hikers can use Snorre from the saga literature as their guide. At several points, visitors can read about the place, people and events in Snorri’s Heimskringla. The archaeological excavations at Melhusbrua are also part of the Sagastien. The trail thus connects reading stops about the saga literature with an archaeological point of interest. The rock art field at Gravråksmoen is considered the best-known in Melhus and includes numerous figures, including a large human figure.
The churches also offer distinct historical highlights. Flå kirke is a wooden long church dating from 1794. In Horg kirke, a Baroque altarpiece from 1662 takes centre stage. The comparison is therefore between the architectural form and construction date of one church, and historic furnishings at the other.
Hiking, ski touring and swimming
Vassfjellet is a hiking area in the north of Melhus. Jårakjølen is one of the popular ski tours in the municipality: the two names thus represent different outdoor activities. During the summer season, Vassfjellhytta offers simple refreshments on a hike, including hot drinks, juice and waffles. Plan your stop for the right season, and check the latest information in advance if you would like to take a break there.
Svorksjøen is one of the swimming spots where Melhus municipality measured water quality during the summer season of 2026. For swimming plans outside this period, check the latest information from the municipality. Along with hiking and ski touring, the swimming spot offers another seasonal focus; which one suits you depends on the activity you want your trip to centre on.
