The area around Midtsandan offers places to swim and walk, seasonal paddling, and sites with a notable historical connection. Midtsandtangen brings these different interests together: here you can spend time by the water and also encounter the history of a former defensive installation. Getting there and finding your way

AtB route 70 serves the Midtsandan stop. From there, you can continue on foot to Midtsandtangen. Check the latest departures before travelling, as timetables may change. A parking area for 250 cars has been established at Midtsandtangen, in the vicinity of the destination.

Swimming, walking and nature at Midtsandtangen

Midtsandtangen is one of more than 2,000 state-secured outdoor recreation areas. Swimming and walking are welcome there. East of Midtsandtangen is a natural area registered as a seagrass meadow. The Norwegian Environment Agency has proposed it as a priority natural habitat type—so this is a proposal, not a designation that has already been made. This combination of a recreational area and nature-related features makes the place relevant to different interests, although they need not be part of the same experience.

Malvik IL organizes group paddling from the end of April until sometime in October. In most weeks, paddling takes place on Wednesdays or Thursdays, mostly from Midtsandtangen out to sea; occasionally, trips take place elsewhere. If you would like to join, ask in advance about current dates and participation requirements.

Fjord views, café and bakery

The Messebygget, which offers views over the Trondheimsfjord, is also nearby. Event rooms can be rented there: first check the calendar to see whether any times are available, then send your rental request by email and wait for confirmation. As rental procedures may change, it is advisable to check the current process before making an inquiry.

Brød og sånt is a café and artisan bakery in Storsand at Midtsandtangen. It is located on the St. Olavsleden and Romboleden routes. Its offerings include fresh stone-oven bread, locally roasted coffee, cinnamon rolls and cakes. If you have particular products in mind, check the current selection and opening hours before your visit.

History at the end of the headland

During the Second World War, Midtsandtangen was transformed from farmland into a defensive installation. A wartime bunker stands at the very tip of the headland. It is the main destination on the Easter Walk and is a reminder of the “empty tomb.” The Easter Walk on Easter Monday began in 2013; in 2019, it was described as a fine tradition with good participation. These dates provide historical context and do not indicate whether the walk takes place today.

More places to visit in the wider destination of Malvik

There are also a range of options beyond Midtsandan in the wider destination of Malvik. The Malvikstien is 2.5 kilometres long, accessible, and runs between Hommelvik and Muruvik. It follows a disused section of the Nordlandsbanen railway. In the Høybydalen outdoor recreation area, circular trails range from forest and marshland terrain to a gravel path. Malvikmarka has a ski trail network of about 35 kilometres; check its extent and maintenance condition before setting out.

For a cultural highlight in Malvik, visit Malvik kirke: the wooden church was put into use in 1846. It preserves an altarpiece, a pulpit and a baptismal font from Gammelkirka. These regional destinations complement the activities at Midtsandtangen, but they are separate places within the wider destination of Malvik.
