Kolgrov: Coastal Landscape and Early Settlement
Accommodation in Kolgrov
Kolgrov is located on Ytre Sula, within the wider destination of Solund. The coast and archaeological traces offer two concrete themes for planning a trip: coves, skerries and bathing areas on the one hand, and evidence of early settlement on the other.
Coast, coves and skerries
The sea area around Kolgrov stretches from Lyngøyna to Rørdalsfjorden and includes many islets and skerries, including Kverknappen. The coves Husøyna and Norde Kalvika in Kolgrov face northwest and are surrounded by bare rock and coastal heath. The quay and beach area in Kolgrov is also used for bathing. The coves, the quay and beach area, and the broader skerry landscape show different aspects of the coast.
Traces of early settlement
There are rock overhangs with traces of early settlement below the Kolgrov farm. There are nine burial mounds in total below the farms Kolgrov, Indrøy, Steinsund and Stokkevåg. This figure applies to all four farms combined. Traces of early settlement and burial mounds are thus two distinct forms of evidence at the heart of Kolgrov’s cultural appeal.
