Accommodation in Flatraket
Flatraket lies at the end of Flatraksdalen. This gives you a choice of different topics when planning your trip: trails and hikes in the valley, as well as a harbour, small beaches and activities on the sea in nearby Flatraket. If you are looking for a hotel in Flatraket, it helps to first consider whether your days will be shaped mainly by hiking, spending time by the water or a mix of both.
Flatraksdalen: loop trail and hikes
Flatraket IL opened the loop trail around Flatraksdalen in autumn 2020. The entire trail received a new gravel surface in 2024 and 2025. You can walk it as a loop in either direction, or as an out-and-back route. There is a dedicated car park at Fosselida, signposted from the main road. As car park and signposting conditions can change, check this information locally before you travel.
The loop trail is one possible focus for a trip in which you want to explore Flatraksdalen on foot. In addition, the valley has many well-marked mountain hiking trails, alongside the gravel fitness trail. The routes vary in their destinations and course; the following examples provide specific guidance to help you choose.
To Synnevahornet and through Hestedalen
The hike to Synnevahornet starts in Flatraksdalen on a forestry track and initially continues as far as Torvhusa. There the route changes to a trail. In the middle of the valley, it crosses the river via a small footbridge. The route then passes through Hestedalen, where there is an old mountain pasture with two restored “sel” buildings. The change from forestry track to trail and the buildings at the mountain pasture are both notable points along this route.
Check trail conditions locally before setting off. This helps ensure that your plans reflect the actual conditions for your hike.
Junctions and longer loop hikes
The first section of the hike to Alskartinden also follows the fitness trail in Flatraksdalen. At the inner end of the valley, the trail to Alskartinden branches off from it. From there, you can enjoy views of Flatraksdalen. If you are weighing up different hiking destinations, the shared start along the fitness trail and the junction at the end of the valley are useful distinguishing features.
At the inner end of the trail through Flatraksdalen, you can also turn off towards Gangeskaregga. From Håkonshallen, a trail continues in the direction of Lynghaughornet. A longer loop hike is described via Håkonshallen, Namneberget, Synnevahornet and Selet, then descending through Flatraksdalen. This loop hike and the trail towards Lynghaughornet are two separate route descriptions. This allows you to compare the destinations described without treating them as a single hike.
Nature and activities in Flatraket
Another point of interest in the valley is Esterbekken: its spring has never dried up. If your stay includes time by the water as well as hiking, there are additional options in nearby Flatraket. There are several small beaches for swimming. Access and conditions at the beaches depend on the season and weather.
Flatraket also offers opportunities for boating and recreational sea fishing. The waters just outside the village can be rough in places. Visitors arriving by boat can use a harbour with a breakwater and guest pier. Harbour conditions can change; check them locally before your arrival.
