Flekke: Swimming, Disc Golf and the Post Road
Accommodation in Flekke
Swimming, disc golf and historic routes
Hammaren is a popular swimming spot in Flekke. At the beach, you can wade and swim; a rock also offers opportunities for jumping and diving. The beach and rock therefore offer different activities at the same swimming spot: you can stay in the water or make use of the opportunities for jumping and diving.
Lending Gard in Flekke offers another activity. The farm has a disc golf course with 18 holes, as well as a simpler six-hole layout. The shorter option offers another way to fit the course into your day. Check the latest details before visiting.
The Post Road and the fjord landscape
The Trondhjemske Post Road connected different parts of the country and is one of Norway’s oldest public roads. To reach the section in Flekke, turn off County Road 57 by the shop towards Haugland, then turn right immediately after the hill. From there, the route passes the youth centre and a shooting range, then follows the valley to Stav, the highest point on the route. It then descends towards Dale. Trail conditions can vary, so check the route’s condition before setting out.
In the wider region, the Flekke and Guddal watercourse stretches for about 30 kilometres from Flekkefjord to the mountains near Guddal. The first 8.5 kilometres, up to Harefossen, form the anadromous section of the river. If you fish in this area, note that a fishing licence for the Flekke and Guddal watercourse is valid only together with proof that the fishing fee has been paid. Check the current regulations before fishing. Flekkefjord is a small arm of the Dalsfjord; the Røde Kors Haugland Rehabiliteringssenter is located near the fjord.
Nearby, Jensbua is located at Leitet, at the entrance to Flekkefjord. The boathouse was built around 1920 by Jens Haugland and is now owned by Jensbua Kystkultursenter. Its activities include, in particular, the restoration of older buildings and boats. Lillingstonheimen, a farm belonging to a district magistrate and dating from 1808, and Fredensborg are within walking distance of Jensbua.
Other nature and cultural attractions in the Fjaler destination
Fjaler stretches from the west coast, with the islands of Lutelandet and Lammetun, to the mountain areas on the border with the municipality of Sunnfjord to the east. In Ytre Fjaler, the Vidsyn day-trip cabin stands on Bygdeheia. From there, views extend in every direction and out across the sea to Alden. Vidsyn can be reached from Furset or Skor; both starting points have parking, and conditions may vary by season.
Around 2010, a project by Fjaler Municipality cleared and marked a total of 20 hiking trails; all of these trails are listed on UT.no. TiTur Dalsfjorden is a hiking partnership involving Fjaler Municipality, the Fjaler hiking association, other associations and Askvoll Municipality. Most TiTur routes are described on UT.no and have downloadable GPS tracks. However, not all destinations have marked or signposted trails. Before setting out, check route information, GPS data and trail-marking details.
The Post Road also shapes the cultural landscape of the wider Fjaler destination. The Dale–Leirvik section was built between 1801 and 1806 for weekly mail transport and passes through varied scenery with numerous cultural heritage sites. A total of 19 stone bridges were built along this route.
In Dale, Klokkargarden, the childhood home of poet Jakob Sande, is the main base of the Jakob Sande Centre for Narrative Art. Bestefarstaua in the centre houses a museum collection and an exhibition. Løa serves as a cultural venue for events, meetings and rentals. The Fjaler Theatre Festival takes place every September; specific programme dates vary.
