Lomen: Church, Fjord and Nature
Lomen offers several themes to consider when planning a trip: Lomen Church as a cultural attraction, the Lomendelta for birdwatching, and Lomisberget and an e-bike route as specific excursion options. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Lomen, it helps to first consider whether church art, seasonal birdlife or cycling is your main interest.
Lomen Church as a Cultural Attraction
Lomen Church was consecrated in 1914. Three stained-glass windows by Emanuel Vigeland form its altarpiece. Those wishing to include sacred art in their travel plans will find a specific point of interest here. The church lies between the E16 and Slidrefjord and is easy to see from the rest area at Kvåle. The view from the rest area complements the altarpiece with an exterior view of the church in its landscape.
Lomisberget: Views and the Route to the Destination
Lomisberget offers a beautiful view over Slidrefjord. To reach the destination, drive about 2 km along Ellestadvegen from the E16; after parking, a tractor track continues for about 1.5 km to the destination. A route description from 2020 gives this route; check the information locally before setting out. This makes it possible to include the viewpoint in your plans with a specific route in mind.
Birdlife at Lomendelta
Lomendelta is protected as a bird sanctuary. Birdlife is most diverse there during the spring and autumn migrations, although individual sightings vary. After leaving the E16, Lomen power station, about 200 metres west of Lomen Auto, offers a good view of the outer parts of the delta. From there, you can scan the area with a telescope. Both the season and the vantage point at the delta are therefore relevant when planning a birdwatching trip.
E-bike Route and Excursion Planning
The Slidrefjorden østside e-bike route covers 32 km from Lomen via Fagernes and has an elevation gain of 220 metres. Parking for the route is indicated at Lomen stave church or Slidre sports ground; before setting out, check whether these options are currently suitable on site. By comparison, the route to Lomisberget is described as a tractor track of about 1.5 km after parking, while the total distance and elevation gain provide the planning framework for the e-bike route. Road and route conditions can change; check conditions before setting out.
Vestre Slidre as a Regional Context
In the wider destination of Vestre Slidre, the historic Stølsruta hiking route runs through Vestre Slidre between Nord-Aurdal and Vang. The national Mjølkevegen cycling route passes through mountain and summer-farm landscapes in Vestre Slidre. The wider destination also offers its own themes for those interested in cultural history: Stølsvidda in Vestre Slidre and Nord-Aurdal was recognised as a selected cultural landscape in 2018. Gardbergfeltet in Vestre Slidre is a historic cultural landscape with more than 900 prehistoric finds as well as around 660 burial mounds, stone heaps and hillforts. Check current trail and surface conditions before setting out.
