Grotli: Skiing, Mountain Hikes and the Gamle Strynefjellsvegen
Accommodation in Grotli
Grotli is a starting point for skiing and mountain tours, and one of the most frequently used gateways to Breheimen National Park. The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen also begins here. When looking for a hotel for your trip, consider which season and activities are most relevant to your plans. In Grotli, options include groomed cross-country trails and ski touring, as well as mountain hikes and cycling. Tours vary by activity and time required, so check the specific route and seasonal conditions.
Skiing and Ski Touring
In Grotli, you can ski on groomed trails as well as off-piste. The varied terrain around the ski lift and towards Krosshø is suitable for beginners and experts alike, both within and beyond the alpine ski centre. The facility's conditions can vary by season. There is often enough snow in Grotli for skiing well into June. Check the current snow conditions for your travel dates.
There are many options for ski touring from Grotli in the Tafjordfjella and Strynefjellet mountains. Terrain and safety conditions vary seasonally; check local conditions before setting out. This lets you adapt your plans to the conditions at the time of your trip rather than assume they remain constant.
Cycling the Gamle Strynefjellsvegen
The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen is a 27-kilometre National Tourist Route between Grotli and Videsæter. Cyclists are advised to start the route in Grotli; parts of it are gravel. The road surface and seasonal access may change, so check both before setting out. The stated distance provides a concrete guide for route planning, while the conditions along the road should be considered separately.
Mountain Hikes and Planning Your Time
Grotli is a starting point for both short and long mountain hikes. Krosshø and Skidulaupen are among the best-known mountain hikes in Grotli. There are different estimates to help you plan your time: walking from Grotli Høyfjellshotel to Lake Kjerringtjønne, at about 1,100 metres, takes approximately 40 minutes; the walk from Grotli to Danskehytta takes about four hours. The lake lies between the hotel and Danskehytta, with several smaller lakes in the surrounding area.
Danskehytta lies in the southern Tafjordfjella at an elevation of 1,440 metres, in rugged, weather-exposed mountain terrain. The route there follows a marked hiking trail; check the trail conditions and markings before setting out. A hiking trail marked with a T also leads from Grotli to Skridulaupbu in about seven hours. Hiking time may vary depending on conditions; check the current DNT route information before setting off.
Getting There and Finding Your Way Around
Grotli Høyfjellshotel is located on the Rv. 15 across Strynefjellet, where buses run several times a day. Check bus frequency before your trip. There is a large car park and several information boards from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens vegvesen) at the hotel. A marked DNT hiking trail or cross-country ski trail starts at the hotel. It is also the starting and end point for tours into the Tafjordfjella and to Breheimen/Jostedalsbreen.
Grotli Høyfjellshotel opened in 1905. Its historic atmosphere, with wooden walls and a crackling fireplace, can still be experienced today; check separately whether a visit is possible. This history complements the route information: Grotli offers both trails to nearby destinations and longer tours into the surrounding mountain areas.
