This makes it possible to plan whether you would like to visit cultural sites, include a shorter stretch of trail or embark on a longer hike.

Art history and contemporary art

The Peder Balke Centre is housed in a listed building dating from the 18th century. In 1834, Peder Balke created twelve murals in the ballroom. The centre includes an information centre about the artist; during the summer season, it hosts changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Historical wall paintings and a seasonally changing exhibition programme thus offer different highlights at one cultural venue.

Café Gromt is also located at the Peder Balke Centre. It serves hot or cold lunch dishes, coffee and homemade cakes, and offers catering. As the food menu may change, check what is currently on offer before your visit.

Mjøsas Ark and Kapp Melkefabrikk

At Mjøsas Ark, you can see genuine Viking swords and genuine rock carvings. The museum offers a journey through 8,000 years of history. Animal depictions found on the shore at Glemmestad have also been moved to Mjøsas Ark at Kapp Melkefabrikk. This makes the museum visit thematically different from the Peder Balke Centre: here, the focus is on finds and a long historical perspective, while there it is on Peder Balke, his ballroom and changing exhibitions.

Kapp Melkefabrikk and its surroundings have a long history, have been restored and are now used as cultural spaces. Another link to outdoor art is the sculpture “Protese og visir” in Tallodden on Kapp. It uses stones from the shores of Lake Mjøsa and expresses artistic ideas of repair or protection.

Trails for different kinds of outings

Strandvegen Kapp is a hiking trail about 4 km long. Along the way, you pass several cultural venues, playgrounds, swimming spots and outdoor artworks. From the Peder Balke Centre, you can continue along Strandvegen to the Dagsturhytta at Billerudstranda. These named stops and destination give the route a different character from a trail leading to just one place.

For a longer outing, a pilgrimage trail starts in Smørvika in Kapp and runs to Steinsjå, covering about 14 km. The two stated distances give you a concrete comparison for planning: Strandvegen is about 4 km long, while the pilgrimage trail is about 14 km. Also take into account the route change near Baakind when planning the longer route.

Planning visits and seasonal activities

Mjøsas Ark’s regular opening hours follow the summer holidays for primary schools and apply from mid-June to mid-August. Outside this period, guided tours for small and large groups can be booked in advance. Check the opening hours before your trip if you are planning to visit the museum.

The ship Skibladner calls at Kapp Melkefabrikk. As ship calls are seasonal, check the timetable if you would like to coordinate your visit with one. Friskus IL offers water activities for children and adults; check availability before your trip.
