Fagernes: Culture, Cycling Routes and Valdres Folkemuseum
Accommodation in Fagernes
Fagernes offers several practical starting points for planning your trip: culture at Fagernes kulturhus, Valdres Folkemuseum, routes for walking and cycling, and the annual Norsk Rakfiskfestival. Which of these matters to you also depends on the timing and focus of your trip. Bus connections, the cultural programme and outdoor activities give you different options for planning your stay in Fagernes.
Getting there and onward travel
Valdresekspressen connects Oslo Airport with Fagernes and runs up to eight times a day. Connections are available to Beitostølen, to Gjendesheim in summer, and via Tyinkrysset to Årdal. If you want to combine your journey with a visit to one of these places, check the current timetable: routes and frequency may change.
Cultural programme and Rakfiskfestival
Fagernes kulturhus is a regular venue for Riksteatret and Teater Innlandet. Around eight theatre performances are held there each year; the cultural centre also offers films, concerts and other cultural experiences. The number of performances is an estimate, and the programme may change. If a particular play or concert is important to your travel plans, check the current dates.
Norsk Rakfiskfestival takes place every year in Fagernes on the first weekend of November. The festival centres on Norwegian food culture, particularly rakfisk from Valdres. Visitors can sample and buy rakfisk from participating producers. In the evenings, concerts are held in a large tent in Fagernesparken. Producers, performers and schedules may change, so check the specific programme if you want to plan your stay around the festival.
Valdres Folkemuseum on Storøya
Valdres Folkemuseum on Storøya near Fagernes comprises more than 100 historic buildings and structures. A 1.7-kilometre nature trail along the shore complements the museum visit: signs along the route share information about wildlife, plants, history and traditions. This lets you explore nature and cultural history along the same route, without separating the two subjects.
The museum also includes Fjordkafeen, which serves homemade food made with local ingredients. The museum shop offers items relating to Norwegian cultural history and Valdres, including knitwear, recipe booklets, and silver and wooden products. The shop’s selection may change. If you want to combine your visit with a café stop or shopping, check the latest information in advance.
Cycling and routes in Fagernes
Valdresbanevegen follows a former railway line as a shared walking and cycling path between Fagernes and Bjørgo. The starting point is at the Shell petrol station in Fagernes; from there, the route follows Strandefjorden to Leira. Free parking is available at the petrol station. The round trip on Valdresbanevegen is about 34 kilometres, easy to moderate, and suitable for children. Check current route conditions and possible diversions before setting out.
For a hike, the trail to the Kviteberg viewpoint is another option; it is well signposted from the centre of Fagernes. Fagernesparken has a walking and hiking path, as well as climbing and play equipment and a skatepark. Individual facilities may change; if your plans depend on a particular facility, check that it is currently available.
