Steinsetbygdi: Ski Trails, Cycling Routes and Fishing
Accommodation in Steinsetbygdi
Steinsetbygdi offers several specific activities: a floodlit ski trail loop, cycling routes of varying distances and fishing at Steinsetfjorden. Large parts of Steinsetbygda are classified as a valuable cultural landscape. When planning your trip, it is worth comparing the ski trail, the lake loop, the longer cycling route and the conditions for fishing.
Ski trails in Steinsetbygdi and Etnedal
The 1.5 km loop is floodlit. The ski trails in Steinsetbygdi are groomed by snowmobile by the Nord-Etnedal local community association; conditions may vary by season. At Dalen, the ski trails from Steinsetbygdi connect with Leirin’s ski trail network, which is groomed by a snow groomer. This provides two distinct points of reference for winter sports: the specific local loop and the connection to the Leirin network.
The wider Etnedal destination has about 300 km of machine-groomed ski trails; grooming depends on the weather and conditions. The trail network at Lenningen comprises about 60 km of groomed trails, including routes through treeless mountain terrain up to SpĂĄtind at an elevation of 1,414 m.
Cycling loops with different routes
The cycling routes offer two different scales. Steinsetfjorden rundt is 19 km long, with an elevation gain of 345 m; on the south side of the lake, the loop follows a cycle path, allowing you to cycle all the way around Steinsetfjorden. A rest area along the route is suitable for fishing and photography. Nord-Etnedal rundt is about 37 km long, with an elevation gain of around 702 m. The cycling tour starts in Steinsetbygda; possible starting points include the former Joker Steinsetbygda or Valdres Høyfjellshotell. Much of the route lies outside Steinsetbygda. It passes through four summer farm areas in eastern Valdres and partly above the tree line, with expansive views. In its final kilometres, it follows Steinsetfjorden back to the starting point. This clearly distinguishes the local lake loop from the longer tour, with its summer farm areas and high-altitude sections.
Fishing at Steinsetfjorden
Fishing permits for rod fishing and otter fishing are available for Steinsetfjorden. Boats are permitted with both types of fishing permit. Boat rentals for fishing are available through the Steinsetfjorden Fiskeforening. Check the current fishing permit conditions and rental arrangements before your trip. Trout is the predominant fish species in Steinsetfjorden; perch is also found there.
Cultural landscape and plant life
Large parts of Steinsetbygda are classified as a valuable cultural landscape; the biodiversity of this cultural landscape is also considered very valuable. A 2020 biodiversity survey recorded the plant species Dragehode, classified as vulnerable (VU), at three locations in Steinsetbygdi: along roadsides, on natural pastures and on rocky outcrops.
