If you’re looking for a hotel in Dombås, you can plan your trip around local interests: rail connections, church architecture and walking or cycling routes offer different starting points. The station is on the Dovre Line, and several described routes either start in Dombås or pass through the landscape around the town. This also makes it possible to think of Dombås as a destination based on which connection or excursion matters to you during your stay.

Rail connections and getting around Dombås

Trains from Dombås station run towards Trondheim, Åndalsnes, Oslo S and Hamar. Passengers travelling to or from the Raumabanen can change trains there. If a particular connection is important for your trip, check the train services and operating conditions before travelling. This helps you plan your journey around your own travel plans without assuming a particular connection or timetable.

Dombås Church and pilgrim routes

Dombås Church is in the centre of town. This cruciform church is built of natural stone; its walls consist of triple-layer slate masonry using slate from Jøndalen. The Valldalsleden and Gudbrandsdalsleden pilgrim routes run past the church. If you’re interested in sacred architecture or pilgrim routes, you’ll find two distinct features at one named location: its distinctive masonry and the church’s position along both routes.

Walking and cycling routes with different itineraries

The Nasjonalparkvegen across Dovrefjell is a 34-kilometre route from Dombås to Hjerkinn. It can be travelled on foot or by bicycle and follows a good gravel road with very little car traffic. The walking and cycling route between Dombås and Hjerkinn is also close to Dovre National Park, Dovrefjell–Sunndalsfjella National Park and Fokstumyra Nature Reserve. For this route, the length, endpoints and option to travel on foot or by bicycle are particularly clearly defined.

Other routes can be distinguished by their itineraries. Grønbogrunda goes through the Grønbogen forest area to the mountain and the Grønsetra summer-farm settlement at an elevation of 1,030 metres. The Blæstergrende rundt cycling loop leads from Dombås to the signs for Dombfossen, then west along Vestsidevegen via Joramo and back to Dombås along the E136. Dovrebygda rundt can also start in Dombås. These details give you several specific reference points: a route with stated endpoints, a route through a forest area and cycling loops with named sections.

Landscape and culture in the Dovre destination

The Dovre destination spans landscapes ranging from high mountains to broad plateaus. The northern part of Rondane National Park in Dovre includes the peaks Høgronden and Digerronden; this glacially shaped high-mountain landscape has wide open areas, deep valleys and sharp-edged rows of peaks. Dovre National Park lies between the E6 across Dovrefjell and Grimsdalen. Its landscape includes broad plateaus, rounded peaks and some of Norway’s southernmost palsa mires with permafrost.

The Dovre destination also has its own cultural landmarks: Dovre Church is a wooden cruciform church that was completed and put into use in 1736, then officially consecrated in 1740. Large slate slabs cover the building. Fokstumyra Nature Reserve in Dovre Municipality is a Ramsar wetland, protected for its importance to migratory and breeding birds. There is a prepared path and a birdwatching tower there; seasonal access restrictions apply during the breeding season.

Dovre swimming pool

The Dovre swimming pool is centrally located in Dombås. It has a 25-metre competition pool with five lanes, as well as showers, changing rooms and saunas. As opening hours may vary by season, check the latest hours before planning a visit.
